In this second volume of Ultraman we watch Shinjiro Hayata become more accepting of his heritage. Since Shinjiro is apprehensive about becoming Ultraman, the SSP takes a new approach to apprehending criminals – ignoring them until Ultraman arrives to save the day. Ultimately, the SSSP tricks Shinjiro into accepting his fate. This happens just in time since earth is being invaded by a horrifying alien race that feeds off of human flesh.

Final Word:

I thought this volume really dragged along. It had an incredibly slow start that took me a few sittings to get through. I simply couldn’t stay focused enough to remain interested in the first half of the book. I didn’t become interested until somewhere past page 89 and to be truthful, I’m more enthusiastic about the side story with the two detectives. Ultraman himself just isn’t original enough to grab my attention. Shinjiro seems more concerned with earning the approval of his father over being a hero who saves lives. Additionally, the villains just seem to be aliens who think humans are tasty. If there isn’t more development than this, I don’t know how much longer I can stay on board. I won’t write this off yet since there is still room to grow, but if Volume 3 doesn’t show promise I’m jumping ship.
