Final Thoughts

Welcome to the second volume of The BS Situation of Tougetsu Umidori! With this second… wait… what does this say under the volume number? F-FINAL!? Wait. WHAT!?

So, that completely blindsided me. I suppose we’ll jump into the final thoughts on the series overall then…

First off… this did not feel like a final volume at all. The plot just got going as we learned about Bullshit-chan’s past with a character named Mud Hat. We learn how he is a Liefluencer who seeks to enhance beliers and manifest lies through hypnosis. Bullshit-chan was a member of his faction, but she had self-awareness and had more human-like emotions than anything else. She wanted to live, but do so on her own terms, so she betrayed the faction. One manifested lie, named Hurt-san, took exception to that and has been hunting her down ever since.

That’s the main focus of the second volume. While the situation does get resolved, the series “ends” with Bullshit-chan swearing to Umidori that she knows a belier who can grant her the ability to lie, and thus, Umidori fully agrees to help Bullshit-chan devour lies so that she can continue to live and exist and help Umidori achieve her goals. Still, we get no resolution at all to the Mud Hat situation, even though he was established as the main antagonist of the series. We have no resolution to the situation with Nara and her lie. We were never introduced to the person who could give Umidori the ability to lie, nor any other members of Mud Hat’s faction. We never got his real name or anything of the sort.

We were just left hanging on a conclusion that says “See you in Volume 3,” except there isn’t going to be a Volume 3.

Granted, this is a manga adaptation of the light novels, to which there are four total volumes, and yes, the story continues in those novels, but one would think that if there were only 4 volumes of the light novels, the manga adaptation could have continued and just finished things out. Then again, I’m not the head of a giant corporation. I don’t see sales figures, survey cards, or anything of the sort that would guide my decision to end or continue a series. I’m not completely sure what the reasons are, but if the manga was going to be this inconclusive, I question the decision to even publish it at all.

I honestly feel as if I were slapped in the face when I realized that there wouldn’t be anything more to read in the manga. I only feel that way because I was truly enjoying this series. I marveled at how the first volume was one of the best first volumes of manga that I had read in a long time, and I was looking forward to volume after volume of this off-the-wall premise to entertainment. Volume 2 continued to do just that by throwing more and more random scenarios and situations at you. It continued the feeling of the first volume perfectly, which is why I was gutted to learn that it was over before I even knew it.

No matter how good a story is, the ending is always paramount. That is my belief, but how can I say anything about the ending when there truly wasn’t one, to begin with? As I said, we were left on a “see you in Volume 3” moment with nothing resolved at all. If the manga was meant to be this way from the beginning as a ploy for readers to go out and buy the light novels, this was a poor attempt at doing that. I don’t feel compelled to go out and buy them at all due to the nature of how this adaptation was treated.

I’m torn as to what to score this because the story was great… the characters were great… the backstory and situations they found themselves in were equally as great, but I can’t forgive this series for, essentially, dropping us off at the mall, telling us they’d be back later to pick us up, then never show up… only to find out they ran off somewhere and will never be back. That hurts the score immensely here.

I was going to go 2.5, but I will do the story and characters justice because what we did get was excellent.

Overall Rating: 3 / 5

That’s the highest I’m going for this, excuse the pun, Bullshit ending.
