The Story

Despite Enker’s programming to terminate Mega Man, he ends up living in Dr. Light’s lab alongside Rock and Roll. When Enker learns that Mega Man was nothing more than a housekeeping robot, he feels deeply embarrassed that he was defeated by someone like him. Outside of Enker’s embarrassment, we embark on an episodic journey to catch up with several robot masters.

Yamato Man, who is guarding Robosaurus Park, but can’t defeat anyone because he has to monologue before every battle, which allows intruders to escape! There are Plant Man and Hornet Man, who are running a plant nursery, holding public contests, and educating people about the pollination process. Then, there is Blade Man, who tried out being a tour guide, got fired for being terrible, then got a job in an ancient weapons museum where he’s paid to stand there and go into sleep mode. We also get caught up with Clown Man, who is trying an unorthodox method of drumming up business for his traveling robot circus!

Once we get past some of the episodic chapters, the main story of the series kicks back in. There has been a protest by humans who are tired of living among robots and having them take their jobs. A certain someone (and for once, no, it’s NOT Dr. Wily) is taking advantage of that and fighting for the opposite reason… to protect robots from humans who would rather see them scrapped. This leads to Mega Man getting back into the action and donning the Mega Buster once again! Once the threat is neutralized, they turn their attention back to the story from the first volume… about the world’s scientists disappearing, and there is mounting evidence that Dr. Light may just be next!

As the threat grows, it’s time for Mega Man to stop blending into human society. A brand new 2.0 battle suit is created for him, and it appears that he, once again, must fight for everlasting peace!

Characters

So many characters to run through, but I explained quite a few of them above in the story setting. Characters like Plant Man, Hornet Man, Clown Man, Blade Man, and Yamato Man all have interesting jobs now. I like some of the quirks with them, though.

Yamato Man, for example, adds “I say,” or “I mean,” after every sentence he says. Because he’s a samurai, this is an obvious love letter to Rurouni Kenshin. Blade Man, being terrible at being a tour guide, was hilarious as he spoke more like a teenager than someone who used to protect a castle. While I didn’t touch on them above, there were two who REALLY stood out, so I wanted to save them for this section.

Wood Man… what in the world happened to him!? Wood Man is spending his days at a shrine… not because he needs to repent, but because, for some reason, he has been revered as a divine god! He becomes the symbol of the shrine and grants people’s wishes. He even wants Dr. Light to install a fortune-telling machine in him to play off people’s superstitions. He even has his own divine phone case! (I’d buy one!) Out of everything that could happen to a robot master, I never saw Wood Man becoming a literal god of worship coming. Just insane!

Then, there is Top Man. Top Man is no longer retrofitted for combat, so you would think he would make toy tops or something, right? Nope. He’s a livestreamer! He goes around and films content and isn’t shy about exploiting people (namely, Mega Man) to get views on his channel! Even during the attack by the certain someone that was aforementioned, he helped rescue injured humans, but made sure to use Top 2.0… a flying version of Top Man… to film everything for his channel. It got him views and invited him to a ceremony! Just his coy and shady tactics for views made him one of the best characters in this series so far.

Enker did a complete 180. He abandoned his Mega Man Killer status and became a protector. He was a bit resistant to it at first; however, when he began to find small, insect-sized spy robots hovering outside Dr. Light’s Lab and eliminated them, he had a renewed passion burning in his soul! He swears to protect Mega Man and Dr. Light at all costs, making him a formidable ally! From Mega Man Killer to Mega Man Protector!

Final Thoughts

While there were some comedic aspects, things did take a serious turn in the second half of the volume. The threat of Dr. Light being kidnapped is becoming more serious by the moment, and if Mega Man had to have a new combat suit created just for this purpose, it speaks to how close to danger Dr. Light is. With only one volume left in this miniseries, I’m sure that we’ll probably get to see who is behind the kidnapping of the world’s scientists, and for what purpose. Plus, with some robots, seemingly going maverick for their own ideals (not truly maverick, but it’s kind of similar), it showed that not all of the Wily Numbers are finding peace in a post-Wily world.

I know the old adage is that Dr. Wily is behind everything, but I have a feeling that we’ll be surprised this time around. For once, there is a bit of a mystery to who the culprit truly is. Based on what we were given in this volume, it could very well be another robot master. The one thing that I liked is that this volume referenced other games outside of the main series. It made mention of King from Mega Man & Bass as well as the last “cryptoid incident,” which is a reference to Mega Man V (aka Rockman World 5 on Game Boy) and the Stardroids.

So, there is a whole universe out there to choose from as to who could be behind the kidnappings. Or, I’m just overthinking everything, and it truly is Dr. Wily… again. We’ll see when this series concludes in the final volume! I just hope we don’t have to wait until 30XX to read it.
