The Story
We pick up with the mysterious man suction-cupped outside Yuri’s hotel window. We quickly learn that he is Keiichiro’s older brother, Shotaro! He’s afraid of falling to his death, so he asks permission to break the window and let himself in; however, Keiichiro shows up and denies him entry. He takes Yuri and runs to another hotel, where they end up sharing a suite with Kasuga being a third wheel.
Yuri is scared that Shotaro is there to break them up because Keiichiro has painted him out to be someone that he fears and holds a grudge against; however, as the volume progresses, we come to learn the true nature of Shotaro, making all of Yuri’s worries for nothing as Keiichiro was making a massive mountain out of a mole hill. Despite that, we get the complete backstory between Keiichiro, his brother, and how Shotaro was banished to the fourth residence. Stemming from that backstory, another misconception about what truly happened was born!
With their summer trip ruined, Yuri doesn’t know how to get the feeling she almost had with Keiichiro back. Suddenly, she and Keiichiro receive an invitation to an apology party from Shotaro. They accept and begin to prepare for it… or rather… Yuri is forced to take dancing lessons from the head maid and Kasuga. Once everything is in order, they arrive only to be blindsided by yet another misconception!
Once everything is smoothed over, Keiichiro and Yuri vow to spend some more time together, which brings us to Christmas. It is here that Yuri has a dire realization that she forgot something incredibly important!
Characters
The main focus here is on Keiichiro’s relationship with his older brother Shotaro. Shotaro was originally being prepped to become the family heir; however, Keiichiro, even from a young age, proved to be more studious and smarter than Shotaro. Shotaro also fell in love with one of the maids at the third residence and broke all family traditions and laws just to be with her. This led him to being disinherited and sentenced to the fourth residence, which was described as a family rehabilitation facility.
Despite all of the warnings about him from Keiichiro, Shotaro turns out to be a completely harmless goofball. He would much rather hang around his delinquent friends and have a carefree life than be a slave to his family and their political matters. He isn’t as much of a free spirit as he lets on, though, as he stated that he started his own corporation and even has some capital, which shows that, as irresponsible and clueless as he seems, he does have a bit of business savvy about him. He’s a fun character that I’m sure we’ll see a bit more of as the series winds down.
There was also some tension between Yuri and Keiichiro (but when is there not)? It all stemmed from a 118-question evaluation that he submitted to get Yuri’s feedback about their school trip together. Rather than answer his questions one by one, she writes him a letter and expresses her true feelings towards him. Just this simple act caused the reality brick to hit Keiichiro in the head, and that led him to do something a bit shocking after Shotaro’s apology party ended. It seems as if he’s finally getting it!
Final Thoughts
Shotaro was a fun addition to the series. Once again, we are put into a position where we think that the situation is going to be dire when, in reality, it was anything but. It’s good to know that Shotaro isn’t there to get in between them and wants to support their blossoming relationship! Plus, he adds some fresh comedy to the series as the whole “circumventing the family traditions” angle does feel a bit stale, so the series did need some freshening up… even with it being just three volumes before the end.
I truly felt Yuri’s pain in this volume, though. She was so close to getting what she wanted… on two separate occasions, and then, through circumstances created by Shotaro, had those chances ripped away from her. You can’t blame her for being frustrated, and that came across well for her character, but with the way the volume ended, there might be a nice, tender moment or two coming our way in Volume 7.
If I were to make a non-spoiler prediction, I would say that Yuri panics and tries to do something to make up for the fact that she forgot, but Keiichiro is, like always, twenty steps ahead, anticipated it, and has some intricately laid-out plan to help her. Either that, or it will go in a completely different direction, and Keiichiro can tell her that just spending time with her is enough for him, which would be one of the sweetest things he would do until this point in the series. Or, I could be completely wrong on both ends, and we’ll get another round of helicopters and family members falling from the skies to interrupt them. You never know what will happen with this series.
In any event, I enjoyed this volume a lot, and now that we’re three away from the end, it’s time to see how everything will wrap up. Something tells me the Christmas spirit forces Keiichiro into a decision that will lead us to said ending!
