The Story
Yuri is struggling with her grades, so Keiichiro decides that he’s going to help her study in the most intense way possible. After sending a rolling cart stacked high with materials, hiring a bunch of tutors with over a decade of experience each, and setting up a group study session, Yuri becomes overwhelmed in short fashion. Despite all of that, she barely manages to scrape by with a passing grade. While it wasn’t the results they were hoping for, it’s probably the best that they should have expected from Yuri given her… um… reduced mental functionality (okay, she’s dumb. Don’t look at me like that, she admitted it herself!)
With the study session out of the way, it’s time to turn our attention to Yuri’s birthday. She weighs what she wants to do with Keiichi versus what will most likely happen; however, when Keiichi shocks her by offering to go on a trip, she’s completely beside herself with excitement… until she learns that he just hijacked another school trip because his family would never approve an actual trip that was independent of the school. Taking what she can get, she’s all excited to head to Kyoto when Keiichi drops the devastating news that he cannot attend the trip because his family assigned him enough paperwork to cover the entire duration.
Not having it, Yuri storms over to his residence, where she learns that he pushed back against the family and got them to agree to go on the trip… if and when he finishes the required paperwork. Despite being dumber than a doorknob in space, Yuri comes up with a solution after having a nice conversation with the head maid she worked with over summer break. When a solution is found, Keiichiro is able to join her in Kyoto.
From here, we witness them on the class trip spending time together, but all of that changes when someone drops in unexpectedly!
Characters
The biggest development here comes with Keiichiro. While he was bound by his obligations to his family, he fought back so that he could salvage as much time as he could with Yuri and the school trip. It was uncharacteristic for him to push back against official family orders, but he did so because he knew that he would much rather be with her than anything else. How he explained his feelings to Yuri on the train ride to Kyoto also showed just how much he truly cared about her. It was a really touching scene, and it made Yuri realize that he was thinking about her a lot more than she had realized. Not just now for her birthday, but since they met. I don’t know if this is going to lead to a more defiant version of Keiichiro, but it’s a nice step in the right direction.
Yuri was still Yuri, but her realization of how much Keiichiro cares about her was a nice touch. Although, just like it’s a coin flip as to whether or not we’ll see a change in Keiichiro, it’s just as much a coin flip to see if we’ll get a more understanding Yuri from here on out.
Final Thoughts
This was a pretty sweet arc. I had a feeling that the school trip wasn’t going to go as planned; otherwise, the manga would have been just repeating the same story plot twice in a row without any variance whatsoever. I’m glad that it did get interrupted because it allowed us to witness one of the best and most tender scenes in the series to date. That train ride to Kyoto was something that was truly needed for both the reader and for Yuri’s character. As I said in the characters section, I’m not sure if it will lead to a change in either character, but how Keiichiro truly feels is now out there, and it’s something that Yuri can draw upon in the future.
I can already imagine Yuri getting into some situations and then recalling the words Keiichiro said to her to give her the strength that she needs to push through, but I don’t think we’ll see something like that right away due to the way this volume ended. We have a new character to contend with, and depending on what they want and/or what their goals are, we could be entering a new arc that will test Yuri and Keiichiro in a way we didn’t see coming. Nevertheless, volume six is going to start out in an interesting way; however, I’m not sure it’s going to be something detrimental. For some reason, I’m seeing this playing out a bit differently… that and usually whenever a new character is introduced in this fashion, it’s usually a setup for a misdirection.
We’ll see how it plays out next time!
