The Story
The time has come! Asimo vs Nasa in a battle of wits is finally here… is what I opened my last review with, but I was wrong, but NOT THIS TIME! But, in classic Fly Me to the Moon fashion, there’s a bit to talk about first before we get to that.
We open with Nasa and Tsukasa discussing the origins of her power. Nasa figured out how it works, but Tsukasa is technologically illiterate and cannot comprehend with a R.A.I.D. is. The manga doesn’t tell you, but it stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Yeah, I know a thing or two about computer hardware (I used to build my own PCs until I got lazy and paid companies to do it for me. Plus, if something goes wrong, I only have 1 warranty and 1 manufacturer to go through, which makes things convenient, but I digress.)
Nasa needs to find a way to explain things simply for Tsukasa, so he gets to work on a project that captures his full attention… so much so that he completely forgot about the battle with Asimo! This finally sends us into the mock exam battle. Interestingly, there is a question on the exam that catches both Nasa and Asimo by surprise! The results are in and… well… I’ll let you discover them on your own.
We shift back to the topic of Tsukasa’s immortality. Nasa heads to the mansion, where he explains everything to Aurora and Chitose. With Aurora having some computer science knowledge, she talks with Nasa about how the problem may be understood, but the solution is impossible due to the difference in technology between us and the aliens. Nasa reiterates that it’s not impossible, and states that even if the technology is advanced, it’s not a reason to give up. Plus, they explore the reasons why the aliens never invaded Earth, hammering out all of the possibilities. The conclusion they come to is that they are not omnipotent and that everything is happening by luck.
One thing was determined, though… the real Kaguya is potentially both out there and not out there. In fact, she may just be waiting to either be reborn or reawaken in someone we may already know (and it might not be the person actually named Kaguya!)
Characters
Tsukasa was the main focus of attention here. The biggest thing we learned was that her blood (hence the bloody cover) can heal people, but it’s not capable of passing on her immortality or her powers. But we also learn the true nature of Tsukasa’s existence, and it’s more than just a link to the moon and/or the server that’s powering her immortality. It’s a pretty cool theory that raises a lot of questions… questions that the manga wastes no time in asking. Despite learning the truth about her true nature, Tsukasa doesn’t seem all that bothered by it. Then again, she has been alive for 1,400 years, so I doubt anything truly surprises her anymore. What was cute, though, was that she was more concerned with looking like an idiot when it came to understanding technology talk!
With the results of the mock exam, we learn the fate of Asimo x Himari. Despite how things move forward with them, the big focus here is that Himari has not given up on her theory that Tsukasa is the immortal who saved her life. In fact, she’s sure of it, and she has enlisted Asimo’s help in researching Tsukasa’s alter ego to unravel the truth behind her! If one thing is certain, she sure is determined. Then again, she always seems to get what she wants!
As for Kaguya, she wants to go to a sauna because she believes that it makes you get taller. She wants to get taller by just a few centimeters so that she can witness the world from a new perspective. Okay? I don’t know how a few centimeters will change one’s perspective, but to someone like Kaguya, maybe those centimeters make a world of difference? It’s a bit odd, but I also see it as foreshadowing. I think because her name is Kaguya, we are being led to believe the obvious… that she is the second coming of THE Kaguya, but I also think that it’s just one big misdirection. I have an idea of who the real Kaguya is, though, but I’m not telling!
Final Thoughts
Well, I said in my previous review that I would be shocked if we got any sort of continuity, so color me shocked! We returned to the main story plot, doubled down on it, AND FINALLY did the mock battle between Asimo and Nasa. I am a little disappointed in the mock battle, though. I thought it would have been more grandiose than what we were given, but even the manga poked fun at it by stating that Nasa completely forgot about it. I think Kenjiro Hata went off on a thought stream, did all of this stuff, and forgot he even set up the mock battle, to begin with, and this little line about Nasa forgetting was him poking fun at himself for that. Either that or his editor yelled at him. Whatever the case may be, I saw that as a subtle breaking of the fourth wall, and that gave me a little chuckle.
There are certainly a lot of interesting things that were covered when it came to Tsukasa’s immortality. Even with her not being able to pass on her immortality or her powers through her blood, her blood could function as something else entirely. We saw glimpses into Tsukasa’s past again with some of the people she gave her blood. When they make the realization of what her blood could be, even Tsukasa herself said that she can’t remember everyone she gave it to. But, we do know that it has to do with the original Kaguya, and how all of that ties into the system and Nasa’s explanation of it.
Things just got more interesting, so you know what that means, right? In Volume 30, we’re probably going to open up with them going on vacation, going shopping, or working on their cuddle techniques, thus ignoring things once again. I’m on to you, Hata-sensei. I just know you’re going to pull something like that off! We’ll see…
