The Story
Things continue to heat up with Yuzuki’s problem with the Yan High students. Another incident occurs when Nazuna Ayase, a classmate, conveniently bumps into her desk, and photos of her yukata date with Chitose fall all over the floor. This causes Yuuko to become insanely jealous. So much so that after exams, they go out to celebrate, and she practically chastises and guilt-trips Yuzuki for it. Despite that, Yuzuki has had enough of everything and accuses Nazuna of being a mole, leaking information to the Yan High kids, but Chitose knows that she wasn’t the one.
Suddenly, things go from bad to worse when the Yan High kids show up! After an altercation, Yuzuki breaks down and wants to go to Chitose’s house. Chitose agrees, but he knows that he needs to help toughen Yuzuki up because there is something off about her that he can’t quite figure out. After taking things a bit too far, he gets her to open up. She talks about her past, what her connection is to “Senpai,” and how he instilled so much fear in her due to his actions.
This, in turn, causes Chitose to open up about his parents being divorced, how he came to live alone, and even shared a hilarious story about accidentally pulling a kid’s pants down in elementary school. Yuzuki ends up sleeping over at Chitose’s house, which brings them closer together. She even finds a clever way of thanking him… a way that he probably won’t discover on his own!
Our volume comes to a close as Yuzuki finally realizes that only she can solve her problems, and she looks to confront her past head-on!
Characters
The biggest growth here had to do with Yuzuki. After opening up with Chitose about the abuse and controlling nature she suffered with “Senpai,” she realized that only she can solve her own problems; however, it doesn’t mean that she has to go it alone. Chitose acknowledged that this was their problem, but he would only be there for backup/moral support. Even knowing that, she became determined to face “Senpai” to end things once and for all. This showed tremendous mental fortitude because she had to dig deep to find the courage to overcome her fear of violence, all of which was instilled by “Senpai.” Whether those fears will come back to haunt her when the time comes remains to be seen, but for now, she is fired up and ready to take control of her life back!
Chitose received some development in the form of learning about how he ended up living alone. Through that, we also learned that his parents were polar opposites of one another, which led to their getting a divorce. When Yuzuki questioned why he never chose to go with one of them, Chitose mentioned how even he, as a kid, couldn’t understand how those two ended up together, and I suppose it was that which made him come to a different solution. It was Chitose who suggested that he live alone, and despite his parents being completely different, they both agreed to allow him to do just that while supporting him with an allowance. While it wasn’t super deep, it was some nice background information to help flesh out his character a bit more. That independent nature of his seemed to always be there, along with his unique problem-solving skills.
Final Thoughts
I will say… that this doesn’t feel like the penultimate volume. The next volume is the last one in the series, and it doesn’t feel like everything is going to truly get resolved. We have Yuzuki’s storyline concluding, and unless they rush things, I highly doubt we are going to see which one of the girls ends up with Chitose. Something tells me that Yuuko isn’t going to be it. We haven’t heard from Asuka in forever, Yua is basically wallpaper at this point, so the only person one could logically conclude to would be Yuzuki. After all, even if it was a cliffhanger ending for the last volume and he wasn’t completely serious, Chitose did ask her to be his girlfriend for real. Knowing Chitose, there was probably some half-truth to that question.
If he does end up with Yuzuki, prepare for a hurricane of emotions from Yuuko… especially when she admits that she hadn’t made a move because she hadn’t figured out her feelings quite yet. If this volume was any indication, I don’t know if Yuzuki figured out her feelings completely, but she sure seems one step closer than Yuuko right now. For declaring herself as a rival, Yuuko hasn’t exactly done much of anything to be a threat other than huff and puff at a restaurant over some yukata photos.
In any event, it’ll be interesting to see how this wraps up. I know there is a light novel counterpart to this series, so perhaps the manga adaptation isn’t going to cover everything that the light novel does. With the way the story is being framed, I can almost guarantee that the manga is stopping with more material left to adapt. In better news, this series is getting a TV anime adaptation, so perhaps we can see more there? In any event, it’s going to be a while before we see it because it has been 14 months in the previous volume of the manga, and the final volume isn’t even on Yen Press’ release calendar, which goes all the way through February 2026.
Oof. Well, I guess I’ll see you all next summer for this one? Maybe?
