The Story

As everyone is on the way to find something to eat, Denji is low on energy. They decide on the sushi place; however, in classic Chainsaw Man fashion, it’s suggested that they go to a brothel instead to perk Denji up. Unfortunately, the place they wanted to go to burned down. Denji loses it and admits that he’s only thinking with his genitals, so Asa offers up a solution… to cut it off! She brings Denji to a back alley to do the deed, but something else happens that was, well, just read it for yourself.

Afterward, they head out for sushi, where they meet someone from the Church of Chainsaw Man, claiming that they can bring Denji to see Nayuta; however, he needs to eat sushi with him first. Plus, Public Safety has the entire building surrounded, so escape is not necessary. Another condition to see Nayuta is for Denji to turn into Chainsaw Man and take care of the Public Safety officers outside.

We receive an explanation that Public Safety has a vested interest, and they desire Chainsaw Man’s power. However, they are not interested in the power Denji currently possesses, as he has yet to transform into the true form of Chainsaw Man. There are a few conditions to be met, and one of them has already happened. The other is forced on Denji after a certain event occurs at the Sushi place. Denji loses it completely and transforms into the true version of Chainsaw Man. No one from Pubic Safety is able even to come close to matching his power, including some of the devils we’ve seen from the history of this series!

Our volume ends with Chainsaw Man staring down someone… someone who could have the only chance to revert him back to human form!

Characters

Classic Denji… thinking about sex first and foremost… even above searching for Nayuta. Although Denji himself didn’t get much in the way of development, we learned a bit more about the true form of Chainsaw Man, why Public Safety wants it, and the conditions required to get Denji to unlock Chainsaw Man’s full power. Plus, we got some nice development between Denji and Asa on a romantic level; however, it was mainly the War Devil in the driver’s seat. It was fun to see the conversation Asa/War Devil had with herself once the events were over!

Final Thoughts

I don’t know what to say about this volume. It’s like a lot of things happened, but not much happened at the same time. Some big moments were just so random, though. Like, I understand that not every shocking moment needs a build-up to it as doing it out of nowhere adds to the shock value, but I think some of them, especially THE big moment, were so nonchalant, it lost a lot of the impact. A moment like that could have benefited from a proper build-up, but while it was shocking to see, that initial punch was just missing until things just settled in.

It seems as if Public Safety has a deal with the Age Devil. The whole reason they want Chainsaw Man at full power is so that the true form of Chainsaw Man can devour the devil (the Age Devil even wishes for this), and they can erase aging from the world forever. However, there is a steep price to pay, which, again, was just so random. I mean, that’s this series in a nutshell when you think about it, though.

While we did get some action, a lot of the scenes just felt like stop motion, going from one situation to the next. I would have liked to see more transitional panels to see some of the action rather than just a “Chainsaw Man is here, and now this person’s dead. Now he’s over here, and that person’s dead.” It was a bit too sporadic for my tastes and kind of felt like a rush job more than anything.

Overall, it was a decent volume, but I can’t say it was one of the best. Hopefully, we’ll pick up with the cliffhanger and see what lies in store as another major moment may be upon us.
