The Story

We meet up with Boruto, who we discover is surrounded. Just when he thinks there is no escape, a toad shows up, telling him to touch its back. When he does, he’s transported to an abandoned base once used by Orochimaru, where he meets a former member of Kara… Kashin Koji! Kashin explains things to Boruto about what Amado’s true goals are, what he did to Kawaki, and how Amado created him and the other members of Kara in hopes that they would awaken Shinjuku abilities from the Otsutsuki Clan. Kashin didn’t, at first, but eventually he awakened a certain power… a power that can greatly help Boruto.

Once they finish their conversation, Boruto is transported back to Konoha, where he is captured and interrogated; however, Shikamaru needs to know more intel from him, and knows that nothing will happen if Boruto is captured and suppressed, so he devises a scheme to help Boruto escape, even if it means catching heat from the Land of Fire’s Daimyo. Now free, Boruto waits on the outskirts of town for Kawaki. He eventually shows up, and Boruto fills him in on everything he knows about Amado. Kawaki reasons with Boruto about the Divine Tree, and how all of the Otsusuki must be destroyed… and that includes the two of them. Kawaki calls a temporary truce by admitting that the members of the Divine Tree need to be stopped at all costs.

As they realize that, they make their move on Gaara and his son, Shinki. Shinki, on the verge of being turned into a tree, seals Gaara, who was also on the verge of death. Only Shinki can undo the seal; however, Jura sneers because now that Shinki is a tree, a clone of him is born from the ten tails named Ryu. Since Ryu is a clone of Shinki, he can undo the seal. Kashin uses a toad to alert Shikamaru of the situation about Ryu and Matsuri heading to the Land of Sand to undo Gaara’s seal, turning him into a tree, and a new clone. Shikamaru is doubtful at first, but takes Kashin’s warning seriously, sending Sarada, Mitsuki, and Konohamaru to meet up with two ninja from Sunagakure to take them down. Their battle awaits us in the next volume!

Characters

There wasn’t much in the way of big reveals when it comes to the divine tree people. It was simply restated that they wish to plant the roots of the divine tree and destroy the planet by devouring all of its chakra. We’ve known that for quite some time, but what we did learn is that they are gaining more and more sentience with each passing minute. In the previous series, when Code attacked Konoha, he used those divine tree clones in his attack, but they were all mindless. Now, they have evolved into the people we know of today with Jura as their leader. As long as the ten tails devour someone, they can be cloned with heightened powers and a Rinnegan to go along with them.

As for Code, he made an appearance, but the tables were flipped on him. He came in lambasting the Divine Tree for acting on their own; however, in a heated moment, Jura shows that he has become way more powerful than Code, and actually gets Code to bend to his will. Code can’t accept it, but since both Jura and Code’s goals are aligned, he’ll play along for now!

It was nice to see Kashin Koji again. He apologized to Boruto for their earlier battle, but Boruto was level-headed enough to know that they are both shinobi, and a mission is a mission, no matter how you look at it. He knew that he was under Isshiki’s orders and only did what he did because of said orders. Kashin has a very unique ability, and that ability is something that allowed him to see around Eida’s Omnipotence, even though he admits that he, too, is affected by it. I’ll leave you to discover what it is, but his awakened power is something that will prove extremely useful… almost in a Deus Ex Machina kind of way.

Shikamaru continues to believe that Boruto is the real Boruto. He continues to follow his heart in the belief that he and Kawaki have swapped places in people’s minds. Ever the strategist, Shikamaru is playing as safely as possible, all while believing in Boruto. It’s nice to see him still trying to protect Boruto… even against all odds that tell him he shouldn’t!

Lastly, on the romance side of things, Sarada and Class Rep end up getting into a bit of an argument. Class Rep wondered if Sarada ever considered her feelings for Boruto even once. Sarada can’t even answer her, but when she calls out to Class Rep when she runs away, she says, “How long are you going to keep seeing me as just Class Rep?” Ouch!

Final Thoughts

Four volumes in, and we’re still getting more major revelations. I like how this shift has happened, placing Jura as the primary antagonist instead of Code. Not only did this volume lean in that direction, but they showed it with that little showdown the two of them had. By putting Jura’s power on display, Code was forced to bend the knee to him, much to Code’s chagrin. Then again, this has always been the case with Code. No matter how much he huffs and puffs, he always seems to be put in his place. First, it was with Isshiki. Then, when Isshiki was defeated, and he was on his own, he thought that he was in control… until his little minions gained sentience. Now, he’s no longer in as much control as he thinks he is. It’s almost comical to see him rage and rage, and always end up becoming someone’s lap dog.

Kawaki and Boruto calling a truce was unexpected, but since the two of them know the truth about one another, it makes sense. It was surprising that Kawaki was so calm and rational, though he does realize the truth… as long as the Otsutsuki exists, there will never be peace in the world. All of them have to die… that means the Divine Tree, the Ten Tails, and one another. Unless a plot device happens where they can draw Momoshiki out of Boruto and slaughter him, it’s clear that the ending to this series may involve Boruto and Kawaki killing one another. I can’t see a series like this go to such extreme lengths… especially with the Naruto vs Sasuke fight at the end of the primary series, but we’ll see. This is a world of ninja, and there have been countless deaths in this franchise. Can they pull the trigger and kill off not one, but two main characters when it’s all said and done? That would be interesting.

For now, it looks as if we are confronting Ryu and Matsuri in the next volume. The fate of Gaara hangs in the balance, but according to Kashin… these five are the ones to do it. While it does play spoiler a bit, Kashin himself said that all futures are not guaranteed, and futures can change, so we’ll see if he’s right in sending them after Ryu, or if a new future will be born from his decision!
