A brand-new developer diary for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has been released, giving fans a closer look at the upcoming open world action adventure from TT Games and Warner Bros. Games.
The video appeared during the Future Games Show Spring Showcase 2026 and focuses on the studio’s approach to bringing the world of Batman to life in LEGO form. Executive Producer Matt Ellison, discusses the game’s vision, its open world version of Gotham City, and how the team is blending decades of Batman history into a single story.
The new entry aims to be the most ambitious LEGO Batman game yet, combining exploration, combat, and a large cast of iconic characters.
A Story Spanning Batman’s Origins
Unlike earlier LEGO Batman titles, Legacy of the Dark Knight tells a full story following the transformation of Bruce Wayne into Batman. As the story unfolds, players will encounter many of Batman’s allies including Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and James Gordon.
Each character comes with their own abilities and gadgets, allowing players to approach puzzles and combat encounters in different ways.
Of course, the Dark Knight’s rogue’s gallery will also play a major role. Villains such as The Joker, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, and Bane are expected to appear throughout the adventure.
A Larger Open World Gotham City
One of the key highlights shown in the developer diary is the game’s open world version of Gotham City.
Players will be able to explore the city freely by grappling across rooftops, gliding through the skyline, or driving several Bat vehicles. The city will feature numerous activities including side missions, crimes to stop, puzzles to solve, and collectibles hidden throughout the environment.
Iconic locations from Batman lore will also appear across the map, including Arkham Asylum, Wayne Tower, and Ace Chemicals.
According to the developers, the goal is to create a living Gotham that feels packed with references to Batman’s long history across comics, films, and television.
A More Dynamic Combat System
The developer diary also highlights the game’s revamped combat system. Players will be able to combine gadgets, stealth tactics, and combo-based attacks while taking on Gotham’s criminals.
This approach draws inspiration from modern action games while still maintaining the signature humour and accessible gameplay that LEGO titles are known for. Developers have also confirmed that the game supports cooperative play, allowing two players to tackle missions together.
With its larger open world, deeper combat system, and a story celebrating the legacy of Batman, the game looks set to deliver the biggest LEGO Batman experience yet.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is currently scheduled to launch on May 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a version planned for Nintendo Switch 2 console at a later date.
