The Legend of Zelda has a massive impact on the Nintendo Switch era. Not only did we see classic titles remade, and Princess Zelda herself get more time in the spotlight via games like Echoes of Wisdom, but we saw record-breaking sales for the saga and its spinoffs. As such, many are eager for the first true “mainline” game to drop on the Nintendo Switch 2. We have already had a canon game in the series arrive on the platform via Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, which I reviewed and gave a really good score. Then, in the latest episode of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, my co-host Scott gave the honor of his “Game of the Year!”
What might surprise you more, though, is that Eiji Aonuma, the main producer for the franchise, spoke to 4Gamer about things and revealed that the Koei Tecmo spinoff wasn’t intended to be the first game from the series on the Switch 2. However, since it’s now out, things will be “inspired” by it going forward:
“The Legend of Zelda: Age of Imprisonment is the first Zelda title released for the Nintendo Switch 2. If I’m honest, we wanted to be the first to do so. The inspiration we received from our collaboration with Koei Tecmo may be reflected in the Zelda we create. Please imagine this while playing Age of Imprisonment, and look forward to our Zelda.”
Admittedly, that’s not much to go on, as Hyrule Warriors innovated things quite a bit, both in boosting visuals, adding some special gameplay elements, being the second game two years in a row to really focus on Zelda, and so on. For Aonuma to see something that resonated with him is a big deal, and I look forward to seeing what he does next.
