Keith: Games I’m Looking Forward To This Year

By Keith MitchellJanuary 4, 2018
Games I'm looking forward to in 2018

My poor, poor wallet

While we’re just saying our goodbyes to 2017, there’s no mistaking that the year provided us with a lot of game releases. Several amazing titles, of which many ended up being GOTY titles. But 2018 isn’t any slough and it refuses to be ignored. There’s a metric crap ton of games being released this year.

So here we go, just a few games that I’m looking forward to this year. Doesn’t matter the platform. If it’s a game I want to play, know that I’m going to play it. Keep in mind there’s more than likely something that has escaped my mind, and are missing.  Of course I reserve the decision to play as many games as I want.

Monster Hunter World (PS4/Xbx One/PC)

I’ve been a fan of Monster Hunter for quite some time. However, being a fan of the series and living in the West, doesn’t always work. Many titles we never got and I was very upset at Capcom over this. So with Monster Hunter World getting a worldwide release, I’m super excited. Having played the heck out of the PlayStation 4 beta, I know that I’ll be playing this. Probably more than I should, but I won’t care. I need my monster hunting fix and this game is going to give it to me.

Sadly, the PC version isn’t releasing until Fall 2018.

Code Vein (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

Now that Fromsoftware has closed the chapter on their Dark Souls series, Bandai Namco didn’t take the news lying down. In fact, they decided to produce a new title that is very similar to one of my favorite gaming series. That game is Code Vein, and it looks to be a fix for my Dark Souls craving. While the game is very anime-ish, my brief hands-on with the title at New York Comic Con has assured me that I’m going to be busy when it releases. Tons of enemies to take down, a story that isn’t as vague and a vast character customization system is just the tip of the iceberg. Hurry up and get released, would ya?

Metro Exodus (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

While I haven’t read the books, I did enjoy both Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light. Owning them on both the PC and Xbox One, I’ve revisited this games often. There’s just something about the post-apocalyptic world, the characters and the story that is told. Now, eight years later, we’re finally getting a follow-up. I was at the Microsoft conference at E3 2017 when this title was shown off and I think I cheered the loudest when it was confirmed to be Metro. In fact, I may have made some poor soul go deaf (sorry).

But what exactly is going on in this new game is beyond me. Has the world gotten better since Aytrom took his mask off once he got outside? Will the Dark Ones be present? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Witchfire (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

Making the world know if its existence during the 2017 Game Awards Show, I couldn’t be happier to see this gem. It has the creepy atmosphere. The weird looking creatures. A gothic means the wild west look. And it does remind me of (don’t you dare say it) DARK SOULS. All kidding aside, there’s not much known about the game. Other than it’s coming from the creators of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and it looks so good. Honestly, it reminds me of an old-school shooter than I’m sure many of our readers won’t recall. That game being Hexen.

Oh, The Astronauts (the developers), we need to talk about this little game you’re working on.

Anthem (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

Who has never wanted to be like Iron Man? Well, me, I preferred War Machine. But besides that, who hasn’t wanted to strap into a kick-ass technological suit of armor and take to the skies. Or carry some badass weapons as you take it to some unknown enemy or walk among huge creatures that could kill you at a moments notice? If this sounds like something you can get behind, then like me, you’re waiting for Anthem. EA’s and Bioware’s upcoming title that promises to let us be our own Iron Man (or War Machine). What’s that? Bioware is making it? The same Bioware that made Mass Effect Andromeda? Nah, that was Bioware Montreal, who was also dissolved after that massive failure. The real Bioware is working on Anthem, so I’m not concerned. But think about it. A game that could be like Destiny x The Division x Pacific Rim.

Yep, I can’t wait either.

Spider-Man (PS4)

Spider-Man is only my favorite Marvel comic book character. He’s not overpowered, he has morals, he isn’t rich and he has the same troubles as most normal people. And he’s the freaking Spider-Man, who’s finally getting his own AAA game. Sure the other Spider-Man games were alright, but Insomanic is going all out with Spider-Man’s PS4 outing. We’ll be able to swing from buildings, taking on some iconic Marvel bad guys. Damn, I’ve been waiting for this. Oh, and it won’t just be about Peter Parker, as Miles Morales will also be making a showing – just not as a playable character.

Spider-Man, Spider-man, does whatever a spider can…..

Dragon Ball FighterZ (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

Who doesn’t want to play a fighting game with one of their favorite animes? In Dragon Ball FighterZ, we’ll be able to play as three of our favorite Dragon Ball characters (that were announced) and fight others in glorious anime combat. I had a chance to play this at E3 2017 and was in love the moment I picked up the controller. Sure I’m not as big as a fan of fighting games as I used to be. But I have zero doubt that once DBFZ hits, I’ll be jumping head first into the game. Win, lose, I don’t care. As long as I get to charge up my MAKANKOSACANNON!

Dark Siders III (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

The first two Dark Siders titles were easily some of my favorite games. Though they mostly flew under the radar, for those who played them loved every bit of them. Full of action, loot, puzzles and platforming elements, the Dark Siders games had something for everyone. Now we’re finally getting the 3rd game in the series, which is fantastic. Especially since Dark Siders II didn’t do as well as THQ wanted. Then there’s that little thing of THQ being dissolved (Thank you Nordic Games for being the label back to life). This time around we won’t be controlling either Death or War. Nope, this time we’ll be rocking with their sister-in-arms, Fury – who just happens to be a mage with a whip. Her task? To track down and element the Seven Deadly Sins. This title actually runs parallel to Dark Siders II. So as Death is trying to save his brother, Fury is doing her own thing.

Thankfully the title is being worked on my Gunfire Games. A company who is compromised by members of Vigil Games, the original studio that worked on the previous titles.

Project Octopath Traveller (Nintendo Switch)

This game came from out of nowhere. I mean, when Square Enix first announced it, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But after playing the demo, I can’t wait for this. Damn, that pixel art looks amazing, doesn’t it? And it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch – so you’ll be able to enjoy it on the go or docked. And let me tell you, that demo had me hooked. Multiple storylines, a return to an enjoyable turn-based combat system and it’s fun. Yep, time for another JRPG to make me go, Ah Yeah!

This year is shaping up to yet another great year for gaming. I can’t for the games I mentioned to be released. As well as the ones that I’m completely overlooking. Looks like I’ll be giving a lot of blood this year.
