Japanese Racehorse Haru Urara, Inspiration for Umamusume Character, Passes Away

By Richard HeatonSeptember 9, 2025

Fans of the Umamusume franchise are mourning the loss of Haru Urara, the Japanese racehorse who was the inspiration for her cute counterpart in the game and anime series. Earlier today, Martha Farm confirmed that she passed away due to Colic, a common gastrointestinal complication found in horses.

She was 29 years old and rose to fame for her unprecedented feat of running in 113 races from 1998 through 2004 and winning none of them. When Umamusume: Pretty Derby was released, a similarly named character inspired by Haru Urara was implemented, and her story includes an unwinnable race.

She quickly became one of the game’s most popular and meme-able characters, especially after the game released its global server in June 2025. Since then, Haru Urara became an icon, with fans sending ryegrass to the real horse and a ton of artwork made by fans.

In the hours following her death, fans have been posting numerous tributes in the form of messages and fan art.
