Starting this off with “this is a total rumor,” but it’s an interesting one, no doubt. The success of the Super Mario Bros Movie in 2023 was both undeniable and unexpected. It became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, and that has many wondering what will be next for the sequel that’s already been confirmed. Some think we’ll get another romp in the Mushroom Kingdom, but some domain name filings seem to point to nintendo and Universal Studios going a different route. As in, they might be thinking of doing a Super Mario Galaxy movie!
As noted by Insider Wario64 on Twitter, Universal Studios has gotten some domains that tie to the beloved Nintendo Wii title. Usually, if Nintendo filed such a thing, it’d be a non-story, as it could mean something as simple as tracks from the game coming to Nintendo Music. Universal Studios filing for this definitely means they have something planned featuring this game.

For the first movie, Universal used https://t.co/kT7oaJCDzS for the movie's website (now points to VOD/Disc links since it's been out for years) https://t.co/q0zVL2LsAI pic.twitter.com/2uvjPnIwJQ

Why would this work? Well, the original movie showed off many different parts of the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond, including the realm that Donkey Kong and his family lived in, Rainbow Road, and more. The studio might think doing another film set in this land might just be a “retread” of what came before. Super Mario Galaxy took things to the stars and gave us a new beloved character in Rosalina, who could be a key addition to the movie’s roster.
Plus, it’d give Bowser a meaningful way to come back, because he’d have gotten all-new power via the Grand Stars.
Again, this is all rumor and speculation right now, but we know a sequel is coming, and tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct could tease what the film is about!
