Is Tony Stark Going To Die In ‘Avengers: Endgame’?

By Keith MitchellMarch 18, 2019
Iron Man Posing in Avengers Age of Ultron

I don’t think he will

Tony Stark, that cool exec with the heart of steel. Someone who many think is going to be one, if not the only, casualty of the upcoming Avengers: Endgame movie.

I, however, don’t happen to be one of those people. Sure it’s been stated that Robert Downey Jr. is ready to call it quits when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then again, we keep hearing rumors that he also wants to do yet another Iron Man film before it’s all said and done. So which is it? Only he knows for sure.

Yet, even if the iconic actor, that has changed even how Tony Stark is portrayed in the comics, does eventually leave, it doesn’t really mean that this character is going to that great scrapyard in the sky. Nope, I definitely don’t think that’s going to happen.

Here’s why:

When we first see Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War, he’s talking to his best friend and future wife, Pepper Potts. During that segment, he’s talking about his future, with a child being a huge part of it. This is I felt was some heavy foreshadowing going on here. Sure, he eventually goes into space and we know what happens next, but he does get back home. He’s survived the “Snap” and we see him in the most recent Avengers: Endgame trailer, alive and well, back on planet Earth, with the remaining Avengers and friends.

Sure, we don’t know what’s going to happen to him in Avengers: Endgame, but I’m speculating that death isn’t one of the things in his future.

He is literally the one character out of all the Avengers, that is committed to putting Thanos down. While everyone has felt some impact of Thanos thinning out the universe, it’s Tony Stark who has had the thought of Thanos and the impending future stuck in his head. We’ve seen glimpses of this in Avengers: Age of Ultron. While some of this was thanks to the Scarlet Witch messing with his head, Tony has been dealing with this since the first Avengers film. He brings it up again in Iron Man 3. It’s been something that has been weighing on him, affecting him emotionally.  He has the drive, he can back up his talk and right now, he’s desperate to right everything’s that’s gone wrong.

One of Tony Stark's biggest regrets

Not just from Infinity War, but also what happened between him and Steve Rogers. The break up of the Avengers as well. Even the death of his parents, which he could very well correct if he gets his hands on the Time Stone. Everything so far has been pushing him, but he’s now a man at the breaking point, which is why I feel this makes him so dangerous that he’s going to do everything in his power to make everything right.

He’s a man that despite all his talents, all his power and all of his trinkets, it’s not enough. That’s he’s not enough. This ultimately sums up Tony Stark ever since that fateful encounter in the first Avengers film. He doesn’t feel that he has done everything that he can, that he’s not enough to handle whatever comes next, which is exactly why I feel that there’s no way he’s going to go out without proving that.

Iron Man Age of Ultron Regrets
Not being enough is Tony’s biggest regret

In the end, who knows if he fails or succeeds, but I doubt that Marvel is going to want one of the pillars of the MCU to perish. Letting him overcome all the odds and earning the rest that he so rightfully deserves would be the best way to get him out of the picture. Maybe they could even use Iron Man again, in a cameo later down the line. You can’t do that with a dead man, now can you?

One thing is for sure, Avengers: Endgame could definitely be the end of Tony Stark and Iron Man. It just won’t be the way that most are expecting.

Sound off in the comments if you agree or disagree with me.
