If you listen to “certain people,” they’ll tell you that the Nintendo Switch 2 is missing “a lot” right now. While I may host the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, I do try to be objective when it comes to The Big N, and I don’t believe these statements. However, I will say that I do think the new system has some “key flaws” that weren’t fixed from one console to another (I’m looking at you, battery life…) and I’m fine with calling it out. Another key “miss” is that, despite having multiple generations of rival consoles having it, Nintendo consoles still don’t have a true “achievements system.”
It’s honestly really weird, because we’ve seen the joy and wonder it gives fans on other brands to “100% a game” or realize they’ve gotten an achievement, trophy, etc. However, things might finally be changing. A US Patent was filed by Nintendo on September 4th, and while it doesn’t look like much if you don’t read it all, GoNintendo and others have “translated” things, and it’s clear that the Nintendo Switch 2 might indeed get an achievements-style thing down the road.
According to the “translation,” the Nintendo version of the system will feature players completing an in-game task, and then, they’ll either get straight-up rewards or they’ll get points that can lead to those rewards. It’s not dissimilar to the MyNintendo Accounts that players have with Nintendo Switch Online. There’s even a graph that spells things out, with the graph ending at a “Point Shop,” where players can “acquire reward.”
As of right now, there isn’t a tease of a release date for this, but given that the Switch 2 is selling really well right now, it’s possible it could get released soon enough so that players new and old can enjoy it.
