Elden Ring Nightreign is upon us. And players will have to choose between eight Nightfarers to explore the ever-shifting realm of Limveld. Of course, they can switch between any of these characters at the Roundtable Hold, between rounds. So naturally, you’ll want to have all of them playable in this FromSoftware RPG. Only the Duchess and the Revenant require extra steps to unlock, with the Revenant being the trickier of the two.
So gather round the Sight of Grace and attend the spooky tale of how to unlock… The Revenant. [Insert ghostly noises here]
How to Unlock the Revenant in Elden Ring Nightreign
In order to unlock the Revenant, you’ll first have to unlock the Duchess. You can find a guide with two different ways on how to do that here. But essentially, you have to get the Old Pocketwatch. You can get it by playing solo or by defeating Gladius. Once you have the Old Pocketwatch, hand it over to the Priestess and the Duchess will join you. It’s that simple.
With the Duchess unlocked, you can then set your sights on the Revenant. First, go to the Small Jar Bazaar and purchase the Besmirched Frame. It’s time for a haunting.
With that item purchased, a phantom will appear in the Roundtable Hold. It’s okay, it can’t hurt you. Yet. You’ll actually want to find this phantom which can be seen in the opera east of the main room. You’ll see it putting itself in time-out by staring at the corner in the room with the paintings. Touch it.
You’ll then get transported back to what looks like the tutorial area. Head over to the area where you fought the boss. This time you’ll have a new boss to fight: The Revenant. Once you defeat her, she’ll join the party.
How to Defeat the Revenant
Alright, so maybe you want a little more information on how to defeat the Revenant. The fight can seem overwhelming at first, as the Revenant is joined by her three spooky spirit friends. There’s Helen the Page, Frederick the Pumpkin Head, and Sebastian the Giant Skeleton. These names should be self-explanatory.
Start by picking off Helen. She’ll follow you relentlessly, so best get her out of the way first. From there, move on to either Frederick or Sebastian. Frederick will follow you but is quite lumbering and easy to dodge. Sebastian stays put, but upon reaching low health he’ll fire off spectral laser beams. Essentially, once he starts doing that, just focus on taking him out as soon as you can. But otherwise the order doesn’t matter.
During this time, the Revenant will follow you around as well in her feeble little doll body. She’ll repulse you (as in push you back, I’m not that mean) if she gets too close. Keep her at a distance, which shouldn’t be too hard since she’s not that fast. Occasionally she’ll fire yellow discs at you. These are pretty easy to dodge. She’ll get a bit more aggressive on lower health so don’t fight her until all her spirits are completely wiped out.
And once you send her spirits back to wherever they came from, you can focus solely on The Revenant. She’s arguably the easiest part of this fight. That said, it can be easy to get complacent here, especially if you’re low on flasks. So take your take to keep her away, chipping away at her health. A great time to attack is right after her disc attack. She should go down fairly quickly. And with that, the spooky doll vows revenge. And then immediately joins your party.
How Does The Revenant Play?
The Revenant is the last character that Elden Ring Nightreign revealed, and for good reason. She plays totally different than any other character. While the other characters are melee or ranged fighters, she’s both and neither. How is this possible? She comes equipped with claws and incantations, but as a squishy Nightfarer she’s best utilized to summon her ghostly friends to fight for you.
Necromancy, her passive ability, randomly raises ghosts of your slain enemies to fight by your side for a short time. While they won’t last longer than a minute, several can exist at a time. Even strong enemies and minor bosses may take spirit form on occasion, such as Demi-Human Chiefs or Living Jars.
Summon Spirit, her skill, does exactly what it sounds like. Remember those three spirit friends from the fight? Well, now they fight for you. You can only have one out at a time (guess she still holds a grudge) but you can continuously switch them or even bring them out before they’re fully healed again.
Immortal March, her ultimate art, briefly makes the Revenant and her allies immortal. Note that it won’t stop you from taking damage per se, but it will mean that you can’t get killed at one HP. It can also be used to fire off your spirit’s ultimate attack. But the best use of it is to immediately revive your near-death teammates, no smacking required.
Unlockable Characters in Elden Ring Nightreign
The Revenant is the second of the two unlockable characters in Elden Ring Nightreign. The first one is the Duchess. After players unlock the Duchess, they can then unlock the Revenant.
With the Revenant unlocked, you can haunt Limveld as the supernatural support character specializing in summoning and incantations.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.
