Silksong Hasn’t Been Out 2 Weeks and It’s Already Getting Nerfed

But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Hollow Knight Silksong

The much-anticipated title, Hollow Knight: Silksong, may have only launched a few days ago, but Team Cherry is already rolling out its first patch. Update 1.0.28470 arrives mid-September on PC (Steam, GOG), and at a later date for consoles, focusing on smoothing out some of the game’s sharpest edges.

This patch is Team Cherry’s way of addressing those concerns head-on, tackling some difficulty spikes that appear early on in the game. Outside of making encounters a bit easier to get through, this update will also address currency concerns and balance that out by lowering prices across the board.

While Hollow Knight: Silksong has been praised for its depth and atmosphere, many players quickly found themselves battered by its punishing early encounters. I’ve seen scores of complaints and frustrations across social media, Discord rooms, and even Reddit, all with a common theme, that the game has been kicking people’s asses.

Granted, I haven’t played the game yet as I have an obligation to complete another game first before I dive into Hollow Knight: Silksong. But I’m also the type of person who enjoys a harder than average game.; I’m addicted to Soulslikes for crying out loud. Yet, I also understand that not everyone is like me, and maybe toning down the difficulty is what the game needs to succeed, or at least, succeed more than it already has.

Quality of Life Fixes

In addition to dialing back the difficulty, the patch also comes with a stack of quality-of-life fixes. Some of the bigger ones include:

  • The infamous floating glitch after down-bouncing or using the Faydown Cloak has been resolved.
  • Courier deliveries are no longer bugged and should be accessible later in the game.
  • Soft-locks, like the Lace tool deflect bug in Deep Docks, have been fixed.
  • The currency system now works properly, with Snitch Pick giving rosaries and shell shards as intended.

On top of that, Team Cherry slipped in dozens of smaller fixes, tweaks, and adjustments across the game. Everything from enemies getting stuck out of bounds to minor collider changes has been cleaned up. It’s not a complete overhaul, but it does smooth out rough edges that were frustrating players.

Community Reactions

Of course, having a game nerfed, especially when it comes to bosses, always seems to induce some sort of discourse among the community, and Silksong is no exception. So far, I can see people on both sides of the fence, some being happy about the update, while others are up in arms about people not being able to experience the game as it was originally intended.

Honestly, I sit on both sides. I’m all for people being able to enjoy a game, even at the cost of it being nerfed or balanced. Yet, at the same time, when these changes make it so that I can’t experience the game before they come into play, I feel it’s not fair to me or the other players who wanted to enjoy the game pre-patch. Perhaps if developers made it so that an easy mode or difficulty toggle option was available, perhaps that would make everyone happy.

Still, if you’re in the latter camp, you can play the game before the patch is officially released. However, if you want to get access to that update now, you can do so via Steam or GOG by switching to the public-beta branch.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC (Steam, GOG).
