Hidetaka Miyazaki Breaks Down The Duskbloods In New Interview

A new (dark) experience that should excite people (and their souls!)

The Duskbloods

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct may not have been as chock-full of surprises as we thought (as we noted in the latest episode of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast!), but it did have a few that absolutely stuck out. One of those is The Duskbloods, a new PvPvE title by FromSoftware. You know, one of the best game dev teams around? Just as important, Hidetaka Miyazaki is heading up the title, which likely means the quality will be through the roof. In a special “Creator’s Voice” interview with Nintendo, Miyazaki broke down the game into many elements. For example, how did this idea come to be?

“A while back, we had the opportunity to meet with Nintendo to discuss ideas, and during this discussion, we presented a rough outline for The Duskbloods. It was still very bare-bones at the time—more a loose string of ideas than a proper presentation. The concept itself was different from anything we had done before, and Nintendo seemed very interested in helping make it a reality. So that’s when the project kicked off.”

Apparently, the original version was likely going to be on Switch, but then the Switch 2 came along and it allowed Miyazaki and his team to push things further and go even deeper into their vision. Speaking of which, the game is a true extension of what Hidetaka Miyazaki had in the back of his mind for a title:

“I’ve always found the PvPvE structure very interesting. It allows for a broad range of game-design ideas, while also letting us leverage our experience of designing challenging enemy encounters.

As for the plot of the game…

“In The Duskbloods, the Bloodsworn are competing for something known as “First Blood.” As human society reaches an end, First Blood flows in an event known as the “Twilight of Humanity.” The Bloodsworn are summoned to the Twilight of Humanity across a variety of different times and places in a bid to obtain First Blood.”

In a separate part of the interview, Miyazaki revealed that there are plenty of characters to choose from, with unique abilities attributed to them:

“Yes, there are over a dozen characters for the player to choose from, each with their own identity and appearance. I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them.”

Miyazaki further noted that the game will feature unique gameplay loops, including having player actions in combat, and not just the combat itself, help determine victory in certain cases. Plus, you can deal with random events at times that will change the course of battle!

Oh, and remember that “winged rat” at the end of the trailer? HIdetaka Miyazaki said that this is a being that will give you advice in the game’s hub area, and as for its looks…

“We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman.”

Go figure! The Duskbloods will arrive exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
