Goodbye Destiny 2 Cosmodrome Dreams

By Keith MitchellFebruary 11, 2021
Destiny 2 Cosmodrome

Bungie has no plans to revisit the Cosmodrome.

Sigh, this isn’t what I expected from you, Bungie. When you stated that the Cosmodrome, one of my favorite places in the original Destiny, would be returning in New Light, I was ecstatic. As was a vast majority of Destiny places, as many of us had fond memories of that places. Ever since Destiny 2 launched, I sat patiently, waiting for you to send us back to where it all began. And to your credit, you did, but strictly as part of the Thunderlord Machine Gun quest.

Fast forward to news of Destiny 2: New Light, and you uttered those words – Cosmodrome, we’re going back! That’s all I really needed to hear, and I was sold. Sure, I gathered the rest of the expansion would be good, but I had a hard-on for the Cosmodrome.

But now that the expansion is here, and it’s been available for a while, you weren’t really doing anything with the zone. So I sat patiently again, waiting for you to update us on your plans. And you did, but it simply wasn’t what I wanted to hear – not at all.

For those who are reading this and going, “Keith, I don’t understand where this is going,” I’ll just come out and say it. Bungie misled us all, and the Cosmodrome dream is dead. They have announced that they zero plans to do anything with the Cosmodrome again. This comes from today’s TWAB (This Week At Bungie), which you can read here.

But here’s the take here:

As we approached Beyond Light’s launch, it became clear to us that we had a choice to make: After returning all three of its original strikes, do we invest more time and resources in bringing Cosmodrome to D1 parity or do we switch our focus to building new experiences for Year 4 and beyond? Given that we believed we had achieved our original goals and knowing the community and team’s desire for new content, we chose the latter option. But, when we made that decision, we failed to properly update your expectations for how far the Cosmodrome experience was going to be extended and that was a mistake. So, to clear things up: With the Devil’s Lair and Fallen S.A.B.E.R. strikes returning, we don’t have any active plans to add more to the Cosmodrome than what is there will be focusing on new updates overall.

Yeah, you definitely did fail to communicate this to the fans of the game. As you can imagine, I’m quite disappointed. I feel cheated, I feel lied to, and while I shouldn’t, I do. As I mentioned prior, the Cosmodrome was a magical place for me, and I was looking forward to seeing what Bungie was going to do with it. Perhaps a few new missions. Maybe a new area that wasn’t there before? Relics of an age that is long gone past that we could enjoy for old times sake. But instead, we’re getting nothing.

This hurts Bungie. You already took Cayde-6 from us, and now this? When will it stop?

Destiny 2 Cosmodrome

So I suppose that’s that. No more Cosmodrome dreams, and now I’ll chuck this decision up to lack of foresight… and transparency.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PS4, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia, and PC (Steam).
