Final Fantasy VII Remake, Rebirth, and Part 3 Will All See Releases on the Switch 2

Return to the Planet of Nintendo

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - most anticipated games of 2024

The reunion at hand may bring joy. It may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back. That’s right, Final Fantasy is coming back to Nintendo. Ironically, the game that heralded the departure from Nintendo—Final Fantasy VII—will make its return through the remake trilogy. Now, it’s important to note that these aren’t becoming console exclusives. But Final Fantasy VII Remake, sequel Rebirth, and the unnamed third entry will appear on the Switch 2.

This past weekend, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will arrive on the Switch 2 on January 22nd, 2026. It will also arrive for Xbox Series X|S and PC. There’s no word yet on when Rebirth, which came out for the PlayStation 5 last year, will become available on these systems. But it will arrive in the near future.

And of course, the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will also arrive on these systems in addition to PlayStation. However, that will likely be in the far future, with the game still in development.

Back in 1997, the original Final Fantasy VII arrived on PlayStation. It was originally in development for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which saw the release of Final Fantasy VI three years prior. However, with a technically more ambitious game, Square moved the development of the seventh Final Fantasy to the PlayStation, which utilized a CD-ROM format.

Now, over 30 years later, the Switch 2 proves that Nintendo can handle Final Fantasy VII after all. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade consists of a full remake of the first section of the classic game. Intergrade adds in Intermission, the Yuffie DLC. Check out the trailer to learn more about Cloud and friends’ adventure through the city of Midgar as they prepare to save the planet:

Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi also shared a message about the move to more platforms:

The characters of Cloud, Sephiroth and the others have been loved by so many people since the original game’s release in 1997 and are still loved today. I’m overjoyed that our efforts to bring the game to other platforms will give people who haven’t had a chance to play the game before an opportunity to experience its amazing story.

In our review of Final Fantasy VII Remake, we praised the design of the first game in the trilogy. We noted that “Midgar is a delight to visit in all of its fully realized glory, with tons of areas to explore and even more things to do in it. In finding the balance between tradition and innovation, the game walks a delicate line.”

So players on Switch 2 will have access to Remake as well as the Intermission DLC. And at a nice price point no less. We recently reported that the game will cost $39.99. It will also include a whole host of goodies, including a Final Fantasy Magic the Gathering Booster Pack. And those who purchase the game digitally before January 31st will also see a bonus: the original Final Fantasy VII.

The reunion between Nintendo and Final Fantasy is almost at hand. Players may get their hands on the game on January 22nd, 2026 for Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Hopefully Sephiroth doesn’t intervene.
