We still have yet to see a trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, let alone the game itself. However, that doesn’t stop the speculation machine from debating which Final Fantasy game Square Enix should remake next. In an interview with GamerBraves, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi expressed his fondness for Final Fantasy VI. However, he said that he’d like to see someone else lead a Final Fantasy VI remake.
Hamaguchi did share that many fans tell him they want to see a remake of Final Fantasy VI. But since he’s led the remake of VII for about 10 years, he would want to see a new creator take over for VI. That said, he expressed willingness to help out in more of a support role should it arise.
Hamaguchi stressed that in remaking Final Fantasy VII, he didn’t consciously let any aspects of VI influence the game. However, he did note that his general love of VI likely comes through in the works he produces.
He also spoke about his own games, namely Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. He mentioned that he wanted the second installment of the VII Remake trilogy to focus on the bonds between characters in particular. Rebirth has side quests that level up relationships, but also special Synergy Attacks that bond characters in combat.
In the full interview, the game director also discussed the many minigames in Rebirth, acknowledging that some players ignore them while others appreciate them breaking up the rhythm of the main story. Hamaguchi also shared how the characters have evolved such the original Final Fantasy VII. He gave special mention to Barret and Jessie as characters who the remakes have improved upon.
Final Fantasy VII Remake came out in 2020 for PlayStation 4. However, it will see a new release of its Intergrade version for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The release date for that will be January 22nd. To celebrate the release on these systems, Square Enix has a few events planned, including a special bullet train promotion in Nagoya.
