Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Reveals a New Difficulty Mode

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will arrive with three difficulty modes. After “easy” and “normal,” the game will feature “dynamic” difficulty. This will scale based on a player’s skill level, which is different than your standard hard mode. For combat, Active and Classic battle modes will return from Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Square Enix also revealed a “Story So Far” recap video today. You can watch the video below, in which Red XIII narrates the events of the first game in the remake trilogy. When Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrives in February, it will also share the recap video in the main menu. But why not check it out early?

And that’s not all the info that Square Enix shared. The company also shared some iconic art (including the Aerith and Highwind picture seen above) and more details about Kalm. In the original game, Cloud and friends visit Kalm right after leaving Midgar. In adapting much of the post-Midgar content, Rebirth will very likely start off with an arrival in Kalm. And it appears Rebirth has transformed the sleepy town into a grander village, as seen below.

In a press release, Square Enix describes the new Kalm as “a halcyon hamlet kept safe from the outside world by a sturdy stone wall. Though it lacks a reactor of its own, it thrives thanks to a steady supply of mako piped in from the metropolis of Midgar, which is visible from atop the town’s famous clock tower.”

Kalm will also introduce new characters to the story. Innkeeper Broden will offer to help the party hide from Shinra, harbering a deep dislike for the evil corporation. Another new character revealed is Rhonda, the Mayor of Junon. Billy, Chloe, and Priscilla, three youngsters from the original game, will return in Rebirth with new updates. For example, Chloe will have her name spelled correctly, and no longer be called “Chole.”

Last but not least, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will feature a new teleportation spell for Aerith, playable physical and magical attacks for Red XIII, and the Kujata summon. Check these moves out for yourself when Rebirth arrives for PlayStation 5 on February 29th, 2024.
