Square Enix has shared that sales of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series have surpassed six million. The publisher and developer took to X to announce the news.
Square Enix first released the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series through 2021 and 2022. The series consists of Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, and last but definitely not least, Final Fantasy VI. The titles have seen a number of quality-of-life updates from the originals. These include redrawn 2D sprites, rearranged soundtracks, and even more improvements and features.
These updated titles have sold well since their release. When physical editions of the collection arrived in 2023 for PlayStation 4 and Switch, they quickly sold out. Yours truly only got one by importing a region-free copy from Japan. Thankfully, Square Enix has since accommodated demand by releasing more in October 2024.
While all of these retro titles are at least good games (with a couple considered masterpieces), time hasn’t always proved kind. The original Final Fantasy, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, suffered from a few bugs. It just celebrated its 38th anniversary yesterday, as it released on December 18th, 1987. Now is a great time to experience it however, as the remaster makes it more enjoyable to play (and bug free).
Currently, Square Enix is gearing up to release Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC. While the game already released for PlayStation 5, it will now come to these systems on January 22nd, 2026.
So if you want to check out remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games in the meantime, you may purchase them individually or as a bundle. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, iOS, and Android. You may peruse the whole collection here.
