Fighting Games Snubbed at this year’s Esports Awards

The Esports Awards

It wasn’t a pleasant night for the pad warriors last night at the Esports Awards. Garnering a bunch of nominations and coming up short seemed to be in the cards for us at the show. Every category presented having the FGC show up and get disappointed last night—MenaRD’s amazing display at this year’s Evo 2023 against AngryBird for Street Fighter 6.

Next to MenaRD, there were several nominations made with standouts from all ends, but the genre went empty-handed.

Esport Controller Player of the Year had Zain(Smash Bros), Evo 2023 Street Fighter 6 winner AngryBird, and Tekken 7‘s Arshlan Ash as nominees. However, all were sent home with nothing but the laurels of their titles before the night.

TastySteve, was nominated for Play By Play Caster of the Year, but also didn’t take anything from the night. Thanks to Bandai Namco, TastySteve was given the honours to introduce Reina Mishima‘s trailer for Tekken 8 during the showcase a few weekends ago.

Even HungryBox – Team Liquid Co-owner and Smash Pro – was nominated for the Esports Content Creator of the Year but was casted out before he could make it back-to-back.

The Esports Awards categories leaned towards stars from shooters such as Rainbow Six Seige, Call of Duty, and Apex Legends. DOTA and League of Legends pros were also a common factor in the matter of choice.

Perhaps next year, we’ll see some of the industry greats get their shot, but this year felt like a blowout for the pad warriors. Just ask Reddit.
