My relationship to a certain beloved RPG franchise is well…very specific to two people I know. I’ve talked about them a lot recently on the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, and because of the “nudges” they gave me, I played the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Remake that came out earlier this year. Scott, my cohost on NEP (and one of the two people who got me into the game), reviewed it and called it one of the best games of the year. While I wasn’t “as high” on the title, it was still an incredible RPG.
And that brings me to Falcom CEO, Toshihiro Kondo, who was asked about the response to the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Remake in an interview with Dengeki Online, and he admitted multiple things:
“I think the response has been very good. When it comes to remakes, I think each company worries about how far to go, but the majority of people have said that they liked the direction and level of detail. I’ve heard a lot of people say it was a really good remake, and I wasn’t expecting to receive such positive feedback, so I’m surprised.”
He went on to note that it’s done well not just in Japan, but other regions, too, including being the best-selling game in the whole franchise in China!
Kondo also admitted that the Falcom team worked together with both veteran team members and newer staff who hadn’t played the original title to try and bring the best of both worlds together to make the remake as great as it could be. That included changing the “jumping on the bed” scene featuring Estelle and Joshua to the now legendary dropkick “intro,” and Kondo noted:
I thought that was the deciding factor for the remake (laughs).
And the good news for those of the 1st chapter remake is that the 2nd chapter has been confirmed to be released next year! I look forward to seeing what happens in it. For those who still need to play the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Remake, it’s available right now on console and PC.
