Sega and RGG released a teaser for Wolf Hawkfield ahead of its’ VF Direct Spring Update this morning and during Evo Japan 2025. The wrestler is definitely older and possibly still ready to pose a threat against all challengers. He’s probably armed with his Burning Hammer move. The first grappler of the series is coming to the New Virtua Fighter Project. Wolf’s entrance mirrored that of a wrestling affair in this teaser.
Wolf has seen it all since his debut in the original game. Now, after coming out of retirement, he’ll be ready to return to either ring. It seems as though Wolf has his own Wolf Pack, similar to the NWO’s Wolfpac back in its’ WCW heyday. Wolf sports a bit of a rugged look with a mane of sorts more often than his usual clean shave and ponytail. This fighter has seen some stuff and has the tattoos to prove it. It’s already clear that the designs are inspired by the Hitman Hart’s look as an inspiration.
Wolf’s hunger for a new challenge pushed him to give up the title in pro-wrestling and take on the world in the first few games. When VF5’s El Blaze stepped in and challenged the gentle giant, Wolf couldn’t refuse. Perhaps the lucha libre’s challenge was the push to bring Wolf Hawkfield back to the ring.
No other World Tournament members have been shown as of yet outside of him, “Not Sarah” Stella, and Akira. Nor which wrestling federation Wolf was a part of. Maybe retired pro-wrestler Brett “The Hitman” Hart will be stopping by to help his fellow Canadian out. Wolf’s story can shed light on what to expect from the new game and where the timeline is. Virtua Fighter isn’t a series known to kill off characters or tell them to take a backseat, so there could be more speculation as to who’s here and who’s not. Lau Chan should probably be gone by now since his disease isn’t something to get up and “wok” off, for instance.
It’s been stated that this will be the Virtua Fighter that cares more about the story than ever before in its 30+ year history. AM-2 games have been known to keep things no-frills and lean, focusing heavily on the action, and leaving the lore to instruction manuals. Outtrigger and Virtua Cop are other examples of this. It’s already exciting to see the Virtua Fighter series move in a different direction.
