Eiji Aonuma Gives Hope To Fans Wanting To Play As Zelda

When it comes to The Legend of Zelda franchise, it’s honestly one of gaming’s biggest ironies because the main character is Link, not Zelda. Yes, the legendary princess is almost always within the games in some fashion, but she’s rarely ever playable. The only times she has been playable is in the terrible CD-i games no one liked, or the Hyrule Warriors spinoffs, or times when she has a “minor playable role” that isn’t as meaningful. In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, her roles within the story were grander than ever, and Eiji Aonuma has provided hope for those who want that expanded role to lead to more gameplay time.

Eiji Aonuma talked with IGN and noted that there could be a chance for her to be playable in a future title:

“Yeah, it is interesting when you think about the name of the series, the Legend of Zelda, but Link is always the main character. And Link has been the main character, and Zelda has always been involved, and they have a relationship and their own rules in each of the games. But it is true that, I think there’s always room for thinking about this type of thing and Zelda’s role. And there may be some sort of possibility for something like that in the future.”

Obviously, that’s not a definitive answer, but it’s hope! And hope is sometimes all we have for things like this.
