The Action RPG, Dragon’s Dogma 2, finally broke the 4 million copies barrier two days ago, according to Capcom. The NPC sharing quest to quell dragon Grigori had its’ long-awaited sequel released last year to questionable results.
While the game had a mix of either praise through reviews or disappointment for launch because of technical issues, the news here is surprising. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is still behind its’ predecessor, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS3, Xbox) with 4.90 million, but surpassing the re-release by a few more units on Capcom’s Platinum titles list by 2 million.

With Dragon’s Dogma 1 and 2‘s producer Hideaki Itsuno departed from Capcom’s team to join Tencent’s Lightspeed, it’s hard to say if or when the DLC will come. Fans seem to clench onto this after the tweet broke out. Itsuno-san himself at first seemed to not be discouraged by Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s results not too long ago via VGC.
“I made the game not like a Nintendo one to be liked by all the people, but for a certain type of audience, so it’s normal if some people outside that target audience don’t like the game,” he said. “However, people who enjoyed the game really loved it, appreciated the details and work. I’m very proud of it.” — Hideaki Itsuno
The original Dragon’s Dogma had an expansion called Dark Arisen, which sent players to a new island shrouded in darkness. The massive dungeon mostly takes place in caves and catacombs with new enemies including Death himself. Dark Arisen was re-released for last-gen consoles Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. With the many new changes to the franchise’s engine, a Dark Arisen-esque expansion does feel like the right move.
At the current time, Capcom has yet to indicate whether an expansion is being worked on. Dragon’s Dogma 2 was released at least 13 years after the original, so there could be something to consider from the history. Dark Arisen did appear a year after, also. Most of the attention for the next year seems to be put onto other projects such as Resident Evil 9: Requiem, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
