The Story
We open this with the battles between Arthur and Lucas, along with Tessia and Glayder. Arthur is trying to learn how to control wind magic on the fly as he battles Lucas, but as he does, he can sense something happening with Tessia and her core. Realizing she’s in trouble, he abandons his fight to protect her, getting seriously injured in the process. Arthur receives many visitors during his recovery, but he also receives something else that surprises even him!
After he (mostly) recovers, he must teach his first class, but it won’t be easy, as all of his students are skeptical of being taught by a first-year student. They make their voices known; however, Arthur’s ominous presence and commanding voice get them to fall in order. During all of this, Gideon visits Arthur as he has a gift for him in his personal training room… a golem named Tobi! Now, Arthur has a training partner… and after several upgrades and modifications, it becomes something he can actually rely on!
Lance Bairon (Lucas’ brother) and Lance Alea visit Director Goodsky to warn her of something they have discovered. At the same time, they are having a conversation. Lucas and two of his cronies find Arthur in a dark hallway. One of them, Marcois, starts leaking mana and spouting nonsense about Princess Kathryn. He loses his mind and control over his own body, attacking Arthur. Of course, Lucas denies any involvement and walks away, leaving a crazed Marcois along with Arthur in a life-threatening situation. After Claire joins Arthur and finds Marcois subdued, they make a startling discovery about him… and it’s not the first case they’ve seen!
Characters
Arthur’s development was front and center in this volume, with many facets. The first big development came during his recovering the hospital, which involved him and Tessia. Needless to say, Tessia was concerned for Arthur, and that allowed her to confide a few things in him. Things didn’t get simpler for her when her family showed up and began talking about the issues she was having with her beast core assimilation. This gets Arthur to put her through some training. During this, Arthur needs to reflect on things, and the problem he’s wrestling with is whether or not to tell Tessia about how he was reincarnated into this world. In the end, he decides against it as it would cause too much confusion, but certain aspects made him give it some thought.
On the other hand, Arthur has to learn how to be both a professor and a student. Even though his class is a basic introductory one for most mages, he knows what he’s talking about. Still, he had to stare down disbelief and ridicule from his students, but that didn’t faze him one bit. He showed strength and put them in their place, which is thanks to him being a former king, which ties back into his thoughts about whether or not to keep that a secret from Tessia (or anyone else, for that matter). The one thing he hasn’t learned yet is how not to be so reckless. Despite that, though, when he shielded Tessia, he knew he was going to get hit, and that it was going to hurt like hell, but he took it anyway, which speaks volumes about what Tessia means to him.
Lucas is still as bratty as ever. He scolded Arthur for running away during their battle to protect Tessia, but underneath his angst, you can tell that there is jealousy there because he demanded to know how Arthur traveled from their location to Tessia’s in under a second. It truly bothers him that there are so many things about Arthur that he can’t figure out, but as much as an insufferable jerk he is, he still bows his head in respect to his brother, Lance Bairon. Whether it’s truly respect or just the acknowledgement of the hierarchy of his family, it still forces respect out of him.
Speaking of the Lances, we get to meet Lance Alea. She has insanely high perception skills and even admits that, as powerful as Lance Bairon is, his perception can’t even come close to hers. Despite that, strength-wise, she admits that she’s the weakest of the Lances, but has quite the playful personality as she takes a liking to Arthur. Even though her perception skills are high, they can make mistakes because she approached Arthur because she thought he was harboring ill thoughts about Lance Bairon, when in reality, it was for Lucas. The fact that she got that wrong contradicts her claims about her perception, which, in and of itself, was a subtle joke. You only realize it when she lets her guard down and speaks as her true self, though!
Final Thoughts
This volume felt a little bit like a transitional volume more than anything, but in a good way. We got some nice progression with Arthur and Tessia as characters, and we are setting up something dark and ominous on the horizon. You can tell that Director Goodsky is going to be relying on Arthur for what is to come because she not once tried to hide what Lance Bairon was there to do. While she didn’t disclose any information about what his message was, she also didn’t hide the fact that the news he brought wasn’t good. If she wasn’t planning on sending Arthur in the future, she would have never spoken of Lance Bairon’s business at all and kept all of that information close to her chest.
The situation with Marcois was interesting, too. I’m not sure if it’s related to Lance Bairon’s news, but on the surface, the two issues seem to be separate. That could all change because Director Goodsky seemed troubled over the discovery, and it was the same reaction she gave to Bairon’s report, so there is a chance the incidents could be related, but why would one incident take place at Xyrus Academy, and the main discovery somewhere else? All we know for sure is that Lucas knows something about Marcois’ situation, but he’s not saying anything… at least for now. Given the grudge he holds towards Arthur and the fact that he ended their spar, which annoyed him, we’re going to get a third battle between them, and I’m sure whatever happened with Marcois will play a huge part in that battle. When it will happen, I cannot say, but I feel as if this is something that will be touched upon a bit later.
Outside of that, I feel bad for Tessia. Then again, Arthur’s reasons for the way he reacted are kind of legitimate, and those reasons are what made him think about how he was reincarnated into this world. It makes you wonder if there will come a time when he decides to let the cat out of the bag, but if he does, would anyone believe him? What benefit would it serve him? The only person I could see him telling is Director Goodsky… after all, it was shown in previous volumes that she suspects something about him, and that would only confirm things on her end. Plus, she would be the one person he could entrust with his secret. I think it will come out eventually, but to whom, and what effect would it have?
All questions that need to be answered! For now, it seems as if we will continue with the investigation into Marcois’ situation! Let the mystery unravel!
