Final Thoughts

The first official issue of Mega Man X Timelines is here! If you’ve played Mega Man X, then everything that happens in this first issue should seem extremely familiar to you, but in case you haven’t…

The story takes place after two moments in the series. The first being the opening stage of the game, the Central Highway incident with Vile, and the cutscene from Mega Man X4, where we saw how Commander Sigma went maverick. So, it was already established that all of that happened. We are at the hunter base when they receive a distress signal from the frozen north, where Chill Penguin is in command.

As they investigate, we get a nice perspective of X going through the level, including finding the first Dr. Light capsule that contains his leg upgrade! Armed with his new dash ability, X continues through the former missile base until he comes across Chill Penguin. Realizing that he’s gone maverick, they fight. Obviously, Chill Penguin goes down, and we are left with Zero receiving X’s report… that Chill Penguin was contacting someone else before he shut down… Storm Eagle!

I like how they set up Storm Eagle to be the focus of the next issue. Everyone knows that Spark Mandrill is weak to Shotgun Ice, but if you beat Storm Eagle, then his airship crashes into the power plant and makes Spark Mandrill’s stage easier; however, if they REALLY want to stay true to it, the will do Flame Mammoth next because the head upgrade in Storm Eagle’s stage will give X access to his upgraded X-Buster… plus, Storm Tornado is Flame Mammoth’s weakness. Having already beat Chill Penguin, the lava in Flame Mammoth’s stage will already be extinguished, so let’s see if this series can pay attention to those details!

I also like some of the expanded lore about Chill Penguin’s stage. They could have easily just shown X going through the stage (which they did), but it gave the stage some actual meaning, which was nice. The only thing that was a bit odd was Zero’s character. Even in the Day of Sigma OVA, Zero was still a bit more level-headed. Here, he just came across as a dick. Odd choice to make him a bit brasher than I remember him being.

Other than that, great first issue!
