Anime Review: The Dangers in My Heart: Movie

By Josh PiedraFebruary 14, 2026
The dangers in my heart

The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu), in my mind, is one of the greatest slice-of-life love stories of this modern generation. Season one was my 2023 Anime of the Year, and season two would have won had I not had a rule about never nominating sequel series. So, when it came time to check out the movie, it was the easiest decision of my life! For those who watched the series, this will be an amazing trip down memory lane; however, if someone is new to the material, did this film do enough to give you a good idea of what The Dangers in My Heart is all about?

Let’s Go!

The Dangers in My Heart

The Story

The story for The Dangers in My Heart: Movie opens up with a scene after the events of the second season. Kyoutarou got roped into writing the lyrics for a new song that is to be performed by his sister’s band. After certain events transpired, there was only one thing on his mind, and those lyrics were shaped around the experiences he had on his journey with Anna Yamada. As the concert begins, Kyoutaou begins to think back and reflect on that very journey.

From here, the movie goes into a loose recap of the first two seasons of the television anime, hitting on all of the key points. It covers the first time Kyoutarou and Anna interacted, which is how he broke up a rather creepy moment between Anna and an upper classman named Nanjo who is known for being a womanizer. Then, the film moves into select moments from the first season that show the two of them getting closer… from their times meeting in the library, to Anna’s love for snacks, to him buying a magazine with her model photos in it, and more.

Whenever the film gets to a point where it says, “okay, we’ve shown enough,” it does a speed run of the remaining arcs from the season set to a nice music video. If you missed the days of AMVs, you get not one, but two of them in this movie; one for each season.

Of course, the film doesn’t leave out the big ending to the second season, but things don’t end there! For the final ten minutes, we are treated to brand-new footage as we rejoin the concert, still in progress. There, Kyoutarou has made up his mind. Despite feeling the lyrics he had written were totally cringe, he decided to go watch the concert because he knew Anna would be there, too. She sensed his presence and went outside to meet him, but despite their eagerness to see one another, they hilariously and unknowingly kept missing one another.

Of course, they eventually come together, but what happens when they do?

Art, Animation, and Sound

Shin-Ei Animation did an incredible job with the film, with only one minor complaint from me… and that was the usage of CGI during the concert scenes. You can’t truly fault them, though, as hand-animating concerts is a pretty daunting task, and we’ve seen this technique used in a variety of other slice-of-life shows. The trick is to get the CGI to blend in with the rest of the show’s animation, and it seldom happens. Unfortunately, not even with a movie budget, The Dangers in My Heart: Movie couldn’t escape the jarring transition.

Mind you, I’m not saying that the CGI was bad. I felt that it was well-done as the movements looked smooth, but it was quite noticeable, and it will take you out of your suspension of disbelief for a brief moment. Another weird moment was watching the mouths of the characters match the lyrics that they were singing during the song. I applaud them for the accuracy, but the CGI animations made some of the expressions a bit corny.

That is the only negative I have to say about the art and animation, because the rest was absolutely superb. A lot of care went into recreating some of the most iconic moments from both seasons, and you could tell the animation quality increased in a big way.

The classic soundtrack from the television anime was here, too. Those familiar sounds during some of the movie’s most tense and heartfelt moments brought back the emotions we all felt while watching this show for the first time.

Overall Thoughts

Of course, we all know The Dangers in My Heart is good. The internet didn’t call it Peak without good reason. Its second season was the first anime in history to get voted on by fans and get ranked #1 every single week it aired, never falling below that spot. Romance series come and go, but there are very few that leave a lasting impression on you the way this series did.

But that’s not what were here to talk about. I asked if The Dangers in My Heart: Movie did a good enough job so that anyone who hasn’t seen the TV anime or read the manga could get a good idea of what made this show so good.

I’m happy to say that the answer is yes. While the movie did leave out a lot… it had to. There is no way you can fit 25 episodes of material into an hour and forty-five minutes and not have it come off as a total disaster. The best thing this movie could have done would be to pick out some of the biggest moments from the series, and try to tie them all together as a cohesive story… and it not only did that, but it also packed in additional, never-before-animated footage that served as a small sequel to the second season!

For a recap movie, it did its job. I was a bit worried that the music video parts of the recap would make new fans confused, but when I watched them through the lens of a new viewer, asking myself if they made sense had I not known about the story, I felt that it was easy to follow along and get the gist of the things that happened.

I felt the film captured Anna and Kyoutarou’s characters exceptionally well. They hit all the right notes with their personalities, and pulled enough material to make you understand how and why they fell in love. This wasn’t just a film for nostalgia’s sake, nor did it feel like a film to give current fans a reminder that BokuYaba was and still is Peak romance.

This was a comprehensive recap, and if you’re in a hurry and need a “TL;DR” version of the series, I think you’ll come away quite satisfied; however, I am going to recommend that you sit down and marathon both seasons. There are just so many more moments in the TV anime that build that suspense, that make you cry out and wish they would just get together, but that angst… that desperation… that feeling of frustration… all of it tugged at your heartstrings so much, it made you beg for the next episode. You should do yourself a favor and have that same experience.

But again, if you can’t, then The Dangers in My Heart: Movie does a fine job!

Overall Score: 4.5 / 5
