Update: Amazon is patching the uncapped menu screen in New World

Update: 3 Amazon has updated us regarding the recent dilemma of RTX 3090 GPUs being bricked while playing its New World MMO. According to Amazon, they have received a few reports of the game causing issues, while millions of others have experienced no issue. However, Amazon is releasing out a patch that will cap the frame rate while at the menu screen.

Hundreds of thousands of people played in the New World Closed Beta yesterday, with millions of total hours played. We’ve received a few reports of players using high-performance graphics cards experiencing hardware failure when playing New World.

New World makes standard DirectX calls as provided by the Windows API. We have seen no indication of widespread issues with 3090s, either in the beta or during our many months of alpha testing.

The New World Closed Beta is safe to play. In order to further reassure players, we will implement a patch today that caps frames per second on our menu screen. We’re grateful for the support New World is receiving from players around the world, and will keep listening to their feedback throughout Beta and beyond.

Amazon didn’t specify when the update would be released, however, I’d imagine it would b soon based on what’s happening. While I do have an RTX 3090, I don’t have access to the New World MMO beta, so I can’t verify that. As for worrying about frying my card, I would just implement a frame rate limit and all would be fine.

The original story is below.

If you’re someone who’s playing the beta of Amazon’s New World MMO and are doing so on one of those expensive Nvidia GPUs, you may want to stop playing the game. According to multiple reports, including one from VideoCardZ, the beta has been accused of bricking several Nvidia GPUS, specifically the Nvidia RTX 3090 cards.

Update 1: Now that I think about it, this also happened to RTX cards when Halo MCC was released for the PC. This could very well but due to these cards using cheap components.

What seems to happen is the beta causes the cards to overheat, which ends up causing power spikes. While the exact cause isn’t known, some have pointed at the beta’s uncapped frame rate option, which lets the GPUs render as high as they can. So far, multiple RTX 3090 users have reported that by enabling doing this, their cards have been bricked.

So far, Amazon has not acknowledged this issue, and to someone who was looking to play the beta and owns an RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, I’m stirring clear until the company makes a formal announcement.

However, for some, it appears that this may come too late. One such user has shared their experience with New World bricking their RTX 3090 and has already contacted EVGA, a popular GPU maker, on their recent misfortunate. Apparently, this user experienced this happening to not one but two RTX 3090 GPUs. Thankfully, the user posted their experience on the New World forums so that other users can be aware of the issue. What is troubling is that this doesn’t affect older cards, just the RTX 3090 cards. Keep in mind that when the RTX 3000 cards were first released, an initial batch of GPUs that had also experience issues such as this, which makes me wonder if it is specifically RTX cards or all of them.

EVGA New World bricking RTX cards

Thankfully, this all came to light as I had just received a key to play the game, and wouldn’t you know it, I’m also using an EVGA RTX 3090 GPU. It stinks that others had to experience this before this came to light, but the problem is at least known. Now, if only Amazon would acknowledge this and fix the issues — and maybe recoup those who have already experienced the issue. Either way, if you’re rocking an RTX 3000 series card, I wouldn’t test your luck by playing the New World beta.

Update 2: It looks like another user, this time a more widely known person, Gladd, who’s known for his Destiny gameplay, had also experienced the issue.

ATTENTION:

Playing the New World beta on my EVGA 3090 has fried my graphics card completely. There are many accounts of this same thing happening with the same card with the same game.@TEAMEVGA @playnewworld @EVGA_JacobF

I just want to make sure this doesn't happen to others

Even more the reason to stay away from the New World beta until this is sorted. If you’re someone who’s already experienced a bricked/dead GPU, make sure you contact your GPU maker and see about getting the card replaced under RMA if possible. If you must play the game, then make sure that you don’t enable the uncapped framerate option or run a 3rd party program such as MSI Afterburner/Rivatuner or something else to cap the frame rate.
