E3 2017: Project Scorpio Gets An Extra 1GB of GDDR5 Memory

By Keith MitchellJune 8, 2017

It’s not even time for Microsoft’s E3 briefing and they’re already spilling the beans on Project Scorpio.  Originally, the console was set to include 12GB of GDDR5 memory. That’s 8GB’s of memory devoted to developers/gaming, 4GB devoted to the system. That all changes today, as Mike Ybarra has announced that they’re tossing in an extra GB of memory for developers. So while the system will now include an odd number of 13GB of GDDR5 memory, creators and developers will have an even higher ceiling with 9GB of memory.

We’ll keep tuning Scorpio to empower creators to share the best versions of their games. Unlocked extra GB of RAM for them, now 9GB of GDDR5

But where it gets interesting is if developers don’t use all 9GB of the reserved memory, the system will use the remainder as a cache. Cache is basically temporary storage that helps games and applications load faster. Sound like a win/win to me.

What else is Microsoft planning to do with this upcoming console? Find out during their E3 briefing, where myself, Aaron Sanders and Jon Jinks will be in attendance. We’ll finally get the actual name of the console, pricing, game line-up and more.
