For those of us who had the supreme joy of growing up in the 1990s, there was one show that never seemed to get out: Animaniacs. And now the classic cartoon variety show may soon be coming back to a screen near you.
Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation have been discussing rebooting the incredibly popular series after seeing how well Fuller House has been doing on Netflix. Steven Spielburg is also reportedly part of the of the project, which is important considering that he was directly involved in the show’s original 99-episode run. Whether the iconic voices from the show, like Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille, Jess Harnell, Sherri Stoner and Maurice LaMarche, will return for this reboot is currently unknown.
The show follows the adventure of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, three siblings who live in the water tower on the Warner Brothers lot. Every episode consists on a main story, with two or three other shorts played. Zany antics and pop-culture humor ensued, with some education thrown in there. Hell, I wouldn’t have been able to pass my AP U.S. History exam without their U.S. president song. Hopefully the show would not deviate too much in style and tone and stick to the formula that made it so successful in the first place.
While it is easy to get excited, there’s nothing definite yet – no set release date, no talent signing on board, and not a single line drawn. However, now that the cat is out of the bag, and with everyone so excited about the news, they might just have to make it a reality or face the wrath of a generation scorned.
