Nintendo Announces the New 2DS XL

By Tyler KelbaughApril 28, 2017

The New 2DS XL is coming July 28th, and it’s bringing back foldable screens!

In a surprising move, Nintendo announced on its twitter account today that the New 2DS XL will be hitting stores on July 28th. It will run you $149.99, $50 less than the New 3DS XL. The device brings back the classic DS look, with two screens that clamp together. All of the features on the current New 3DS-XL model will be available, including amiibo support, a c-stick, and z-buttons. Plus, it can play all of your favorite New 3DS games; they’re all compatible with the New 2DS-XL. The only missing feature, naturally, is the 3D.

The console’s design looks as good as you would expect. It’s sleek, looks built to last, and will fit into your pocket.

While some might frown upon the release, I’m of the mindset that this is a smart decision. The 2DS was created specifically to appeal to children and people who didn’t want to pay extra for the 3D feature. The New 2DS-XL still applies to that market, and with kid friendly games like Hey, Pikmin and Miitopia launching on July 28th as well, the fit makes sense.

Nintendo could have saved this announcement for E3, but wisely decided to get the word out now. While appealing to some, the New 2DS XL would only serve as a small distraction from big software announcements.

Although it is possible that some families will buy their children the cheaper New 2DS XL rather than a Switch, these markets may not clash as one would expect. Parents may feel uncomfortable buying their children a Switch because of its durability, making a New 2DS-XL more appealing for their child.
