Nintendo Has Discontinued The NES Classic Edition

NES Classic Edition

If you thought that getting a Nintendo NES Class Edition was hard, it’s about to get worse. Nintendo has decided that they will discontinue the sales of the unit and doesn’t have any more plans to produce or ship any more shipments to North America.

According to IGN, a Nintendo rep provided this statement:

“Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

Ever since the launch of the NES Classic Edition, trying to find one in stores has been a challenge. Most stores only received a handful of units, with many of them being sold by the bunches by one person, only to end up various auction sites. Due to this, gamers and retailers alike pledged with Nintendo to produce more units and to their credit they did. Only it didn’t seem that it helped much and even stores in my area have yet to received additional units since December 2016.

The system has been in heavy demand. So much demand that it hit 1.5 million units sold, in such a short time. That said, if you happen to see one in stores, it might be wise to pick it up as you’ll never know if you’ll see another one.

As a consumer, I find that this move by Nintendo is hardly fair and crap. That’s being perfectly honest. I don’t recall Nintendo stating that the NES Classic was going to be a limited edition or promotion. And even if it was, there has been more than enough outcries regarding the fact that you simply can’t find these things in stores. Instead, they’re on Ebay and other auction sites, meaning fans of Nintendo and retro gamers, just were not able to get a chance to own one.

Luckily, we were able to score a unit and reviewed it previously. You can check out the review here.
