Invader Zim Returns to TV in New Movie

By Sara Roncero-MenendezApril 5, 2017

Invader Zim is one of those shows that people from my childhood will never let go of because of its humor, its gloom, and its originality. And in an era where many old and beloved shows are getting extensions and extra seasons, some have wondered if the show would ever get new content. Well, the wait is over:

The video features Zim, the alien invader from the show, describing how he is back to continue his attempted invasion of Earth with his manic, adorable robot GIR. It has been confirmed that Richard Horvitz, Rikki Simons, Andy Berman and Melissa Fahn will be returning to their roles as Zim, GIR, Dib and Gaz. Show creator Jhonen Vasquez is also a part of the project, which means that there likely won’t be any weird changes to the core themes of the show. Since we don’t get to see any artwork in this teaser, there’s no way of knowing if the art is going to look any different from the original style, nor if any time has passed in the show’s universe.

There is no news as to when exactly the movie will be released, or any hints as to the plot. The Invader Zim film is the third TV movie to bank on the nostalgia of 1990s and early 2000s Nickeldeon shows, with Hey Arnold! and Rocko’s Modern Life getting their own TV films sometime this year. the move comes as a way of celebrating 25 years of Nicktoons, but it also signals that the company is not getting the numbers it used to, which is due in big part to the shifting of its content towards more live-action shows. It’s unlikely that Rugrats or Doug will get new content as they had a lot of movies and extras during their runs, but I don’t think many would oppose a Rocket Power movie or maybe a little more Clarissa Explains It All.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
