The Defenders Gets a Release Date Through Mysterious Clip and Websites

By Sara Roncero-MenendezApril 4, 2017

The Defenders is probably one of the most anticipated shows of the year and we finally have a release date, courtesy of this weird little clip:

We see Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Matt Murdock, and Danny Rand all getting in an elevator together at Midland Circle Security, which is known for helping out nobody’s favorite villain collective, The Hand. We see them looking summarily tired before Jessica punches the security camera, with the time code 08:18:20:17, or August 18th, 2017.

That’s not all – two fake websites have also come out on the scene. The New York Bulletin is a fake publication which features fake covers based on the show, including one about a new building for Midland Circle Security and a scientist in search of a lost city. There is also an interview with Ward and Joy Meachum from Iron Fist, though it reveals nothing. More hilariously, the Chikara Dojo, aka Colleen Wing’s business, gets its own bad page and poorly acted commercial, even with a testimonial from Claire Temple.

What does this say about The Defenders? Well, they’ll be facing off against The Hand, for one, though no reference to Sigourney Weaver’s character anywhere. Matt’s costume seems to be MIA since he is seen with a shirt tied around his face. Jessica and Luke also have a potentially awkward moment when they enter the elevator, as Jessica steps towards him until the two look at each other and then quickly away. Jones is also clearly antsy as the elevator descends. But other than that, no new clues to be found yet, and still over four months left to wait.

Did you see any other Easter eggs in this new content? Let me know in the comments so we can swap theories about the big cross-over event.

The Defenders debuts on Netflix on August 18, 2017.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
