First Look at Rain World Opening and Gameplay

By VeronicaMarch 21, 2017

Rain World in an upcoming survival platformer in which you play as a slugcat – a rabbit-like alien creature struggling for survival in an unforgiving ecosystem. After a devastating rainstorm, you are separated from your family and must work your way through otherworldly ruins to find them. Slugcats have their place in the food chain; they are a target for larger predators but must feed on smaller creatures to survive. Rain World is an original sci-fi concept, brought to life with beautifully crafted 16-bit environments and an original score.

This first look opens with a brief cutscene to start the adventure, followed by 20 minutes of gameplay. We see some of the environments players will explore early on in the game, from dreary and industrial to vibrant and full of alien life. The map is also impressively large – the developer boasts 12 different regions and over 1,600 rooms. Navigate these environments by running, climbing and moving through tunnels to evade predators. Players are also faced with the impending threat of rain storms, in which case you must hide or hibernate in a designated safe spot. Picking up small creatures for food and making use of scarce resources is also imperative to the slugcat’s survival.

Rain World is the first game from the independent studio Videocult, based in Boston, MA. It was partially funded by Kickstarter back in 2014 and finally has a release date for March 28. Adult Swim is publishing the game, who already has an impressive history of publishing indie titles.

If you are at all interested in Rain World, it is a featured title in the PlayStation Store’s Play Collective sale. This promotion gives PS Plus members 20% off a featured game each week when preordered. Members can preorder Rain World before its release on March 28 to to get it at a discounted price of $15.99. A similar deal is also available on Steam.
