GameStop Director Thinks Nintendo Switch Could Overtake Wii Sales

By Todd BlackMarch 20, 2017
Nintendo Switch Launch

The Nintendo Switch has undoubtedly been doing well, it sold 1.5 million consoles in its first week, and the moment second-week numbers come in, we’ll let you know, but regardless, the console is selling. In fact, many places are still sold out of Switch’s, and are desperately waiting for more so they can continue the sales rush.

It is in times like these that the stores themselves can offer insights into how the console and its games will sell in terms of numbers. For Eric Bright, senior director of merchandising at GameStop, believes that the start of the Nintendo Switch is so promising, that he tells GameRant it could beat the sales done by Nintendo’s highest selling console ever: the Wii.

“The Nintendo Switch is off to a start right now that it could possibly eclipse the Wii. Initial sales on this have been phenomenal. I can’t give straight numbers, but I can say we’re seeing one of the highest attach rates of software and accessories to a device that we’ve seen in a long time.”

So, what was the reason behind the big sales in his mind? Well, it was two-fold. First, was the heavy hitter killer app known as Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (read our review for it!). Then, there was the focus on multiplayer and portability that led to many devices being bought for it.

“We’re seeing tremendous success with the power chargers for the Nintendo Switch, as well as people coming in and picking up extra Joy-Con so people can turn it into a four-player device.

Nintendo seems to think the Nintendo Switch will do very well this year, as they’ve doubled production of the console from their initial goal. But, will it truly eclipse the Wii? That’s depend on games and Nintendo’s ability to ship out the console. They have the potential, but only time will tell as to whether it’ll exceed that goal.
