Nintendo Switch Is Nintendo’s Fastest Selling Console Ever

By Todd BlackMarch 7, 2017
Nintendo Switch

It’s been quite a week for Nintendo and its fans. The Nintendo Switch launched with Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as its launch title. There are been some issues with the console, such as problems with the Joy-Con, certain “dead pixel” issues, and a few other things, but overall, response has been very positive. After all, all consoles have issues when they launch, regardless of who makes them. But, some news from an interview is likely going to brighten Nintendo’s week, and possibly their year.

New York Times writer Nick Wingfield has reportedly had a very recent interview Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, who told Wingfield some jaw-dropping stats, as Wingfield happily revealed on Twitter:

4. Zelda for Nintendo Switch the best selling standalone launch title (i.e. not a bundled game a la Wii Sports) in Nintendo history…

— Nick Wingfield (@nickwingfield) March 6, 2017

Yes, the Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling console in Nintendo history so far. This means it even beat the Nintendo Wii, which if you recall was a big deal when it launched. Adding to the fun, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now the best selling launch title a Nintendo console has ever had. Notably, Wingfield says “standalone” title, which is fair as Wii Sports was bundled with most Wii’s and sold about 100 million copies technically.

For Breath of the Wild, that’s quite a feat, especially considering that the Wii had Twilight Princess as its launch title, and it sold incredibly well. Although, Breath of the Wild is getting a lot more buzz than Twilight Princess, and is being reviewed so well that it’s now tied for the second in the all-time review scores according to MetaCritic.

So, what does this mean for Nintendo Switch? Well, it means it’s off to a rocket start. And it proves that, at least at present, Nintendo is far from dead when it comes to making consoles. With big announcements about future games already made, and E3 around the corner, Nintendo has all the momentum in the world right now.
