Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers Is Switch Exclusive

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

One of the more interesting reveals that came after the Nintendo Switch Reveal Event was that Capcom was bringing a flashback Street Fighter game to the console, but with some twists. Enter, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers.

However, some were confused by this reveal. Sure, it was the franchises 30th anniversary, and it would have been cool to put a Street Fighter game on the Switch, but was that really it? Well, as IGN discovered when they chatted with series producer Yoshinori Ono, it was about both celebrating the anniversary, bringing something to Switch, but also, making something everyone could enjoy:

“We tried to figure out what we can do to bring Street Fighter to Nintendo. Considering how Nintendo caters to a wide audience of users, we wanted to go back to our roots. We thought that Street Fighter 2 would be the right fit, instead of bringing you a new game that would have a more complicated system,”

That being said, don’t expect this game to play exactly like the old one. There’s new gameplay elements, and the game is being tweaked to be more balanced, as Ono himself said that the balancing standards of the 90’s don’t exactly meet the standards of today.

Finally, though the game doesn’t have a defined release date, but will release in the Nintendo Switch launch window (which is typically three months after console release), Ono has stated that for now, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers is here only for Switch.

“If this title sells extremely well we’ll consider it,” Ono said. “We put a lot of thought into how this can be fully enjoyed on the Nintendo Switch, so for the time being it’s only going to be on Switch.”

So, does this convince you to pick up and play Street Fighter on Switch? Or will you hope for Street Fighter VI to come out to it eventually? Let us know in the comments below!
