Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) has broken record after record after record. Many thought that Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away was safe, but the film that keeps on breaking down barriers broke another one. The film, as of the time of this writing, has earned $331.6 million USD. This is roughly the equivalent to 37.6 billion yen.
This makes Your Name the most successful animated movie in Japan’s history. I believe that sentence speaks for itself.
FUNimation currently holds the license for North American distribution and has been running the film in select markets in the United States. The markets the film has ran in qualify it for nomination consideration for the Academy Awards.
There is no official information about a home release on Blu-Ray; however, according to bluray.com, there is a release date set for October 26, 2017. Given that date is extremely far off, one can only assume (or hope) that it is a placeholder. Typically, an anime film will be released on home video six months after it’s initial release in theaters, which would put a more likely release date sometime in February. That is just our speculation, though.
