“Super Nintendo World” to Open in Universal Studios Japan by 2020

Universal Studios Japan has announced that Super Nintendo World, a Nintendo-themed section of the park, will be opening in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. From the official news release:

“SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™” is coming to Universal Studios Japan and will be the first such opening in the world*1, featuring globally renowned characters and game worlds from Nintendo. Super Nintendo World is targeted to open in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. While Universal Studios Japan will be the first location to open, Nintendo themed areas are also coming to Orlando and Hollywood as announced by Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts on November 29, 2016.

Although the release states that themes and characters from the Super Mario series of games will be featured in this new attraction, it doesn’t name any other specific Nintendo properties that may be included. A conceptual rendering gives a view of Super Nintendo World from over Peach’s castle that includes a Toad House, a multilevel area that looks like a course straight out of Super Mario 3D World and is even topped with a flagpole, and Bowser’s castle in the distance.

Universal Studios Japan estimates that Super Nintendo World will bring in 11.7 trillion Yen for Japan, and create 1.1 million jobs within ten years of opening. There’s no word yet on when Universal’s parks in Orlando and Hollywood will add their versions of this attraction, as Nintendo’s announcement from November 29th stated that they will open separately over several years.
