The Deal Marvel and Fox Made Over Deadpool And Guardians of The Galaxy 2

Marvel Studios

We’ve known Marvel has been in talks with Sony about the fate of the Spiderman franchise but it turns out they’ve been in talks with Fox as well. For those fans of the popular Deadpool movie, they’ve already seen the product of that partnership and will continue to next year. So what was the deal Marvel and Fox put together?

negasonic-and-ego

Negasonic Teenage Warhead was at the center of the deal because Fox wanted to radically change her appearance and, more importantly, her powers. For that, they needed the permission of Marvel, who was willing to grant it, if they could use Ego in their upcoming sequel to the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn explained some of the behind-the-scenes character and plot discussions that took place:

“When I first pitched Ego as Quill’s father, I THOUGHT we owned the character. After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn’t own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade…”

As such, Kurt Russell will play Ego in the next movie, who is a giant living planet in case you didn’t know. In some additional news, the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are back for some reshoots, so something else might have changed behind the scenes as well.

What’s so great about this news is that it opens the door for more deals down the line. Sure, we’re all sick to death of Wolverine, but wouldn’t it be nice to see some of the X-Men fighting alongside Spiderman or have Iron Man help out the Fantastic Four? The possibilities are seemingly endless, and the deal Marvel and Fox made may not even be over.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
