Listen to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Sing New “Moana” Song

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 24, 2016

Moana is set to be the next big Disney musical, likely to dominate the holiday season both in theaters and the radio. As a highly await film with a lot of hype around both the story and the music, Disney has decided to tease its audience with a new song, which also serve as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s singing debut:

The song is called “You’re Welcome” and features Johnson’s character, the demigod Maui, singing about all the great deeds he’s done for humanity. As he humble brags, his tattoos re-enact each feat, such as stealing fire, pulling down the sun, and lifting islands out of the ocean, all to help humanity thrive. Moana, meanwhile, just watches incredulously as Maui dances around her, not able to get a single word in.

The song itself was written by Hamilton writer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda, and while it’s only a fraction of the full song, the clip is enough to excite fans who are dying to give the whole soundtrack a listen. Miranda contributed other music to the soundtrack, along with Oceanic songwriter Opetaia Foa’i and film soundtrack legend Mark Mancina (best known for his work on The Lion King).

Disney also released a clip of Moana earlier this week. In it, Moana first meets Maui, who proceeds to interrupt her at every turn. The scene is likely the lead-up scene to “You’re Welcome” and it gives us some more insight into Maui’s less-than-humble personality. Moana is not having any of it, it seems, no matter how powerful Maui is:

How will these two overcome their differences? Will they be able to make the long trek without killing each other? And the most important question of all: why is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson so perfect?

Moana will make its way to theaters on November 23, 2016.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
