“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” Trailer Reveals Family Roots

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 14, 2016

Star Wars fans waited last night on baited breath for the new Rogue One trailer to premiere. What they got not only added to the storyline of the movie but gave us some sneak peeks at important characters.

What would a Star Wars movie be without family ties? In this trailer, we see Jyn Erso’s father, Galen, confronting the Empire in a grassy field. Right as we start to assume he’s been killed, it turns out that he was the key architect in the building of the infamous Death Star, which the rebels are trying to destroy. It’s unclear whether they’ll have to kill her father in order to get what they need or if they’ll somehow convince him to betray the Empire, but we get to see the father-daughter story we missed between Anakin and Leia.

What’s more is that we see Darth Vader make an appearance, though whether he will be a cameo or a more critical role is unknown. We see Jyn’s inspiring speech to the rebels when all seems at its darkest as well as some more excellent fight choreography with Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus. The trailer definitely makes Jyn look like antagonistic and aggressive, going for more a team player vibe that is more likely comes later on in the movie. We also get a look at K-2SO, the droid for this movie (because there always has to be one) as played by Alan Tudyk, marking his return to the sci-fi/fantasy genre after Firefly.

Teamwork, hope, and a completed Death Star make this trailer not only a much needed reprieve from the wall of silence surrounding this production but a sign that it will stay true to it’s Star Wars roots. I believe I’m not alone when I say that’s something worth celebrating.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will premiere in theaters December 16, 2016.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
