Western Digital Introduces New Blue, Green Solid State Drives

By Clinton Bowman-ChristieOctober 13, 2016

Western Digital is more commonly known for their 3.5″ mechanical hard drives, and among DIY PC enthusiasts, nothing is more go-to than WD Blue and Black for gaming. Enter the Western Digital solid state drive.

Unveiled on Tuesday and available in Green and Blue models, the WD SSD is the first solid state drive available from Western Digital after its acquisition of SanDisk earlier this year.

The Blue model is designed for resource-heavy tasks such as gaming or graphic design, and comes in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB options, in either 2.5″ or M.2 2280 form factors. The WD Blue SSD also offers “up to 545MB/s and 525MB/s sequential read and write speeds” as well as an endurance of up to 400 Terabytes Written (TBW).

The Green Model is more for everyday usage, and comes in 120GB and 240GB sizes, also with the option of either 2.5″ or M.2 2280 form factor. The Green SSD delivers “ultra-low power-draw, enabling PC users to work longer between battery charges,” with “sequential read and write times of up to 540MB/s and 405MB/s” and endurance “up to 80TBW.”

The WD Blue SSDs are available now for prices ranging from $79.99 to $299.99, both at wd.com as well as retailers everywhere. WD Green SSDs will be made available at a future date.
