The Punisher: Give it a rest, Castle.

By Keith MitchellNovember 1, 2012

Am I the only Marvel fan who’s grown to dislike him? Seriously, they way he’s usually written is so one-dimensional it’s boring. And don’t get me started on Garth Ennis. He may be a talented writer, but he’s also a guy who grew up too fast for his own good. (There’s no need for him to be so repetitive and heavy-handed about his hatred for superheroes and religion, either.)

I’d never even heard of the Punisher until I played Capcom’s beat-em-up as a kid at the White Rock Skate Center in Dallas (coincidentally, that game also introduced me to Nick Fury). Looking back, I figured him to be a pretty intense hero who did things his way and didn’t take any crap.

That’s still true, of course, but over the years, I’ve see that the way he goes about it is too brutal and gruesome, not to mention predictable. Even the reasoning behind his madness offers little sympathy after a while, because he refuses to let himself grieve. I understand why he does all this, and to be honest, part of me would do the same. But, I refuse to let that part of me rise to the surface, because it’s not likely that I’d come back. So, while I get where Frank is coming from, I will not accept it.

Now, some of you are going to have a problem with this opinion. That’s fine. I never expect anyone to agree with me on anything I say. But, the fact of the matter is, I just don’t like the Punisher anymore.
